    I am a small business owner and have identified a product i can purchase in either China or in Italy.

    Obviously the product in China would be cheaper than the same one bought in Italy however if i where to import from china, what would be my best method of importing and how much extra taxes would i be looking at for it to arrive at my door and would the same import taxes apply for the product bought in Italy.

    There'll be no taxes at all on the product imported from Italy. Taxes on the product imported from China will depend on what the product is - different tariffs apply to different products.

    It's impossible to say what the best method of importation is without knowing what the product is, and what volume you will be importing it in, and how bothered you are about timely delivery.

    Good morning,

    As Peregrinus advises, if you buy from Italy there is no import duty applicable. If you are a VAT registered trader, your supplier would be able to issue a zero rated VAT invoice and then you account for the transaction in your periodic VAT return. If you are not registered for VAT you will be charged VAT by your supplier at the rate applicable in Italy.

    If you import from China you are likely paying import duty plus VAT on arrival in Ireland. If you are a VAT registered trader the VAT paid on imports is a deductible input in your periodic VAT return. In order to get the rate of duty I suggest to contact the Tariff classification unit in Nenagh, details as follows;

    NB: Classification unit
    If you need advice or help to classify your goods you can contact Classification Unit. While this unit makes every effort to provide accurate advice on the tariff classification, the advice is not legally binding. If you want legal certainty on a tariff code we recommend that you apply for BTI.
