Looking for advice on what 2nd hand car to get.

Drive 50k+ km per year, most of it on back roads of Carlow/ Wicklow.

Currently driving 2011 diesel Fiesta bit keeps having issues, mechanic advises something with higher road clearance.

Any advice on diesel with decent ground clearance that's fuel efficient?

Will have approx 16k to spend.

    Thanks!

I was in a similar situation a few months back and couldn't look past the Skoda Octavia scout.. 4x4 loads of space reliable and frugal.

I ended up with a non negotiable company car but would pick up the scout in a heart beat if circumstances changed.

youd get a new model duster for 17k or thereabouts... with that amount of mileage, depreciation will be fairly steep...

No offense to Duster owners but the thought of spending 50k+ km per year behind the wheel of one would rather have me thinking of moving closer to work or changing jobs. Don't get me wrong, Dusters have their place, cheap n cheerful motoring but when doing 50k km per year I'd put comfort and refinement higher up the priority list than just being cheap n cheerful. The Duster is built to a price point and is just not going to offer comfort and refinement for that sort of mileage at that price imo.

the recent reviews have said it streets ahead of the old one, you may well be right though, that its not a place you want to be doing that high mileage...

Ok I'm very similar only more mileage.

Can tell you what not to buy .... BMW 5 series f10. Serious car. Lovely and comfortable and really don't want to sell

BUT had to do 2 front tailing arms and 2 rear springs, couple other v small bits..... €900!!

I'm going doing next couple years in a fairly fresh Kuga, purely as that was the wife's car for the kids.

If I were you I'd stay simple.... golf or focus. Passat or mondeo if you have long trips.

Diesel and I personally would go for a more powerful golf
