Have used the huawei b525 in the past and it worked well, is there anything else significantly better in terms of achieving the best signal?

also any tips on figuring out where your nearest 3 mast is / how best to orient the modem to get the best signal?

Your best bet it to install an external 4g antenna that screws into the back.

Use the online mobile phone mast to locate your source mast and point the antenna at it. You'll be shocked how much better the speed and ping times get.

An antenna only helps if you've a limitation in the current signal environment. If the OP is sat right under a site then it may do diddly squat.

B525 is a new enough CAT6 device, in theory at CAT12 could go faster but in practice thats very unlikely.

With clear LOS that could be fine depending on contention on that cell.
