Something which i am unsure about is references on my CV.

I have had one employer since college. I feel, that i cant list my current employer, if they were contacted, they would know that i was thinking of leaving.

Are references required, or something that prospective employers use?

Do not put references on a CV. Only provided references in a later stage, when a mutual interest has been established.

References are valuable to you. Do not annoy them by having every Tom, Dick and Harry you give your CV to, contact them.

For personal references, always check with them that they are willing to give you a reference, let them know what you are up to and that they can expect to be contacted.

    Yea.
“References on request” is acceptable, that way you won’t be surprised amd can gauge their interest before hanging over your current employer information.

Head of dept or course leader or a lecturer or project supervisor. Preferably someone who has taught you for several semesters. Someone who taught you in your final year. Makes sense to pick a class you did well in to highlight that.

As above, don't actually put them on cv. You can put 'references available on request', though it's probably assumed.

I agree with all of the above. I will just add one point:

If you cannot get anyone to be a reference for you (e.g. your college lecturers hate you), maybe you have a family friend who is a professional who can vouch for you. The local priest could work too.

Bear in mind employers understand young folk won't really have any references.

How long have you been in the current job? Unless it's quite a short time, then I think you'd be expected to provide a reference from them. It doesn't have to be your manager - is there someone at their level who you could ask in confidence - even if they've since left?

That said, ideally you shouldn't provide any reference details without a job offer, let alone without being asked to do so.

Is a priest really still valued as a referee?
Will it not stink of scraping the bottom of the barrel except for work in the charity industry nowadays?

I think it is scraping the bottom of the barrel, but it's better than nothing, right?

Yes, and I suppose at least it shows some sort of effort being made by the applicant.

Ah right, then yeah - a reference from college is unlikely to do the trick.
