Docs leaking water

Hi, I recently bought a pair of vegan dog martins, got the vegan pair as I like the idea of not using animal products when possible.

I wanted to invest money in a pair of boots as I’m sick of having wet feet and being cold so thought docs where the way to go!

Anyway, wore them today when it was drizzling, feet and socks completely soaked with water starting at toes. I really expected them to be in some shape or form resistant to water. Obviously they are not completely waterproof but I know people who wear them to festivals and seem happy with them.

Is this normal or could I have a faulty pair?

Were you submerging them in puddles or the like? I can't see how drizzle would do that to pleather.

It sounds like they are not fit for purpose. Bring them back. Are they genuine Dr Martens?

    Thanks for the reply :)

Yes they are genuine. I wasn't submerging them in puddles, I was wearing a very light jacket and the rain wasn't heavy......I was on a walk mainly on a footpath and it was drizzling.

Towards the end of the walk I walked through a patch of grass (short grass) and my feet were completely drenched after about 20 steps

They are genuine ''pleather'' docs and I would consider them expensive as I wanted to invest money in a good pair of boots as opposed to buying cheaper ones that leak or fall apart.

I know they aren't wellies and I have owned far cheaper shoes that only became that bad when the soles started coming away from me wearing them so much.

From what you describe, they definitely seem to be not fit for purpose. Don't let the manager intimidate you - he/she justs wants you to go away, even though you have rights. If the boots are not fit for purpose, the shop is obliged to repair, replace or refund. Bring them back to the shop (preferably at a busy time :)), be assertive not aggressive (not saying you would be aggressive) and insist that they address the problem. Bring someone with you for moral support if you feel nervous about it. An older, more experienced person (mother, aunt etc.) would be great for this.

Have you googled the issue to see if it is common and what resolution others have achieved?

Do your research before you go in. Know your rights and be able to quote them if necessary. Stand your ground.

There is a Consumer Issues forum here https://touch.boards.ie/forum/580 you will get more info/advice there, either from the stickied threads and/or existing threads. You could ask a moderator to move this thread to that forum, or start a new thread there.

mmm have worn docs for a long time now and the only ones that have leaked are ones that are pretty old. Not sure about the pleater thing, to be honest find the vegan thing very wastefull ( i mean better use all the animal that not all of it). Either they are faulty and you take them back and ask for a refund or it is the pleater thing, which mmmm is the reason why you buy leather ones . Not being cheeky but there is a reason behind it all

Never had the pleather ones, but i have nevee had any pair leak.

My current pair arent even boots, they are the 3 hole low tops, probably 4 years old and they keep my feet dry through all types of rain.

Where is it getting in, all over, around the outsole, etc

Leather docs don’t leak. Same reason cows don’t leak.

    ;)

Thanks for reply:) I generally try to avoid using animal products and liked the idea of buying the fake leather ones . I honestly thought for the cost of them they wouldn’t be that poor quality. I’ve never owned a pair of real leather shoes and have worn “cheap” boots that were more water resistant than the docs

That is the kind of coverage I was expecting with the docs! Sure people wear them to festivals and stay dry in them!

ive never had a pair of the docs leak on me and I must of had 10 pairs, dont be wasting money on rubbish like vegan boots and you wont have to be worrying about wet feet,

The leather docs are not guaranteed waterproof due to the stitching holes, I found this out the hard way. Anyway I paid to get them sealed in a cobblers in the end.

Yeah, my 3 holes actually don't have the yellow stitching on the outsole, I wanted a bit more subtle look and also thought they would leak less.

So maybe OP, see if they have the vegan ones without the stitching and would exhange for them? I've had pleather jackets that would repel all but the heaviest downpours so it might be the holes rather than the material.

    :D

I know, I just wanted to give accurate description of the type I bought,
I'm sure that they wouldn't market as well being called ''fake leather'':D

Anyway I just wanted to try an alternative to leather and thought that docs would have been made to high spec as they are pricey

I wonder if I could do that with these ? I could bring them to an old school cobbler and get them sealed perhaps. But the amount of water in one of them was quite bad so I don't know if it is that.

Great idea though. How much did that cost?

I might bring them to have them looked at a cobbler as they will see a fault pretty easy I would imagine. there is an older cobbler near me, he will be amused when he sees a non leather pair of docs:D

What do you mean when you say the 3 holes don't have the yellow stitching on the outsole? Are the 3 holes a different type or do mean there are three stitch holes on your docs ? thanks :)

They don't have the yellow stitches that go around the shoe on the top of the outsole. Other than that they look the same, guess they dont need the stitching since they're probably glued anyway. At first I thought nah, they don't look like real docs then but when I tried them on I liked them. I will still probably get some oxblood 3 holes with the stitching though at some point. I don't usually get the boots i find them hard to break in and they hurt the back of my foot.

In my day it was common trollops o` hell who wore docs, not vegans.
