I took a photo of this gate pier while on a walk this weekend. We were not able to identify the significance of the symbols, but do know from local lore that there was a police barrack or similar on the site at some stage in the 19th century.

    Can anyone help with this?

All RIC barracks are extensively documented so that should be easy to verify. Most will be on the older maps on geohive.ie for starters.

This was not the site of a mapped RIC station of the 1800s. We suspect it could be something older and are looking for a lead with the photo.

it's obviously a cannon gun on 4 wheels, with ball exiting the barrel.
Probably the site of a gun-emplacement if located in range of a a major river crossing, old river ford, etc.
Google Fort Eliza, Banagher, Co. Offaly 1812
The location of the site is important and holds the key to the puzzle. If not, the gate-post has been moved in the past from it's original spot.

Funny that the photo was also taken with a Canon
