New knee - sooner or later?

    Hi all,
I've been running since 2009, but regularly had injuries. Earlier this year (after an MRI) I was told that an RTA I was in about 30 years ago has been catching up to me. A cartilage in my right knee is damaged and, if I stop running, I'll need a replacement knee in about 10 years, less if I keep running.

So far the knee is painful when going up/down stairs on occasion, especially the day of, or after, a long walk.

So I'm looking for anyone who has had a knee replacement, and has got back to running for their opinions or recommendations? I'm thinking of going for the replacement sooner so I can (hopefully) have a better quality of life. I'm not saying I want to get back to marathons, but being able to run 2-3 short runs a week, hiking and walking and not be in pain would be great.

    TIA
    Eoin

Not answering your direct question - sorry but I just don't know.

Have had some knee problems (Meniscus tear) but with a sustained strengthing programme I am now back running and pain-free. An operation was mooted but glad I took the route I took. This may not be your solution but just thought I would throw it out there.

    Best of luck!

Tec Diver you have my sympathies, I have knee problems in one leg since a car accident in 2017 that extensive strength training just about keeps in control, knee pains are no fun.

I cant give you advice on this medically, your doctor, preferably a sports injury specialist, should be the one to answer this for you.

Personally, if I was told an operation was inevitable in time and would end the pain plus allow me to run a few times a week pain free then I'd be inclined to take it now rather than suffer for years and years to come, presumably getting more painful with every passing year.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.
