New Year's Eve TV. Advice please?

I'll be hosting a few old timers tomorrow evening to see in 2019. The same bunch, my mother plus some elderly aunts and uncles, were also with me last year and they were lovely company.

But all were hugely disappointed with RTE's entertainment. No countdown,no Auld Lang Syne, they couldn't get over it and I was disappointed too, mainly for them.

So does anybody know if there is a TV or radio channel where the New Year might be rang in in more traditional style? It would be great to know that in advance.

    Thanks for any info.:)

We watch BBC every year, they do the countdown, old lang syne is sung and the fireworks over London are amazing.

RTE didnt do a countdown? So what exactly was on RTE as the clock struck 12?

Can't beat Jools Holland for musical entertainment on new years eve.

Yeah he usually has a great mix, something for everyone. We never go out NYE so it's what we always watch

Relying on RTE for entertainment is like relying on Hitler for democracy. I would do my own thing and not rely on TV at all but BBC and other channels do some proper programmes. As for RTE this year, unless you are a fan of Mrs Brown's Boys, Keith Barry and bad modern music, avoid.

    Jools.

    Gots to be Jools

So guys that programme you're all recommending,is that BBC 1 please?

It's a 75-90 generation that I'll be entertaining tonight and while they like music, preferably something they can relate to and something more traditional. Of recent years RTE links up with Dublin street entertainment, Kodaline and bands like that. Grand for a very young crowd [who are probably all out on New Year's Eve anyway] but useless for a wider audience.

Jools on BBC2. He's a rythm and blues jazz type pianist with an orchestra so his show will be lively with guests from every era. He joins in with some adds his own lively touch to some modern stuff. If you don't know if him he's played with some very big stars

Another option, considering the traditional music preferences of your guests, would be TG4 from 8pm onwards. They have a live program from Donegal from 11.25pm to 1am. I'd trust TG4 to make a better effort than RTE anyway.

Agree. RTE are dire, zero Christmas entertainment, not worth their bloody fee. I think we might try Jools. TG4 sounds like it might be nice but no Irish speakers in the group, I'm afraid.

RTE are dire. Too much Mrs Brown's Boys and then bad modern bands and nothing in the way of a decent concert.

You probably couldn't do a lineup like that live. This year he will have Michael Buble, Jess Glynne, Nile Rodgers, George Ezra, Marc Almond, Rudimental, Yola Carter, and the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guard

Yes and it's a great show. We watch him every year and flick over to BBC1 at 12 to see the fireworks over London. Always fantastic viewing.

Auld lang syne is sung on jools at midnight, just fyi

You won't notice it's not live, plays out like a normal NYE show with countdown and celebrations. In fact you'd never know if you weren't told

RTE are having a live from 23:45 to 00:25. i.e. the absolute minimum live performance they could get away with.

And Gavin James, like I'm sure he's good but you need something a bit lively to play in the new year. They did the same with Kodaline. The big countdown and then straight in to slow songs. Doesn't make any sense. You shouldn't be playing at a party if you don't have any party songs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,420 ✭✭✭✭sligojoek

    Madness for me.

Good start to jools for old timers opening song was a tribute to 50s star Fats Domino. Then George Ezra for the younger generation

Want to thank all you guys for the excellent recommendations. We had TG4 as background entertainment up until about 11 and then switched over to Jools. And wow ye weren't wrong! A really fab show, lovely traditional countdown,Auld Lang Syne, the works! My guests loved it as did I. We had lots of hugs and glass raising and actually it was way better than going out :D Also following recommendations from the good folks here we also switched over to BBC1 straight after to watch the fireworks which were really spectacular.

So a lovely New Year, and so much better than last year with some useless offering from RTE. Having visited Edinburgh in 2018 I was nostalgic for some Robbie Burns. Auld Lang Syne is a wonderful song and a lovely tradition and fair play to the Brits for broadcasting the tradition and keeping it going.

So happy new year to you all and hope 2019 is a great one. :pac:

Only thing is, it's not live.

RTE do live and it's rubbish. Utter rubbish. Jools on BBC was so seamless, so professional and so what people like for new year that it makes the whole idea of "live" irrelevant.

It was bound to be seamless if it was prerecorded, wasn't it?
Just because its on aunty doesnt atomatically mean its good.
Full of groovey new, unknown acts apart from George Ezra and eh, M.Buble. zzzzzzz.

For a New Years Eve programme masquerading as "live", the sound on Jools was pretty cråp too.

Well I know its pre recorded. It's done the first week of December afaik. It blows anything else on telly out of the water and You'd have some job getting that line up live on NYE but fair play for trying to be a prick and "burst bubbles"

    Happy new year.

We ended up watching BBC alba, station mainly for the Highland & Islands of Scotland, they had a traditional gaelic concert/ceili on and it was brilliant. Oh is Scottish so we'd often put it on, watched the fireworks from London. Not a bad night. Flicked over to rte once or twice, its so bad.
