    Hi,

Currently on holidays and my D3300 has started indicating 'Error. press shutter button again'.

From googling it seems a very common issue with Nikon, but I can't get to the bottom of it. Some posts say it's the motor jamming, some say it's the mirror catching.

Ideally I could bring it in somewhere but that is not a runner until I'm back in Ireland.

I think it's easier to show what is wrong that describe, so I took the following vid which might help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWruO3VjrPA

    I've already done the following.
    1 - Formatted the card.
2 - Battery is fully charged (But is a few years old)
    3 - Tried different lens
4 - Tried to take 'burst' photos.
5 - Tried to use Live view - can't use.

    Any suggestions appreciated!

    J

You were close with that video. Pull the lens off, point the phone at the front of the camera and show the shutter action.

One assumes either the mirror or the shutter isn't returning to its home position. Either way if you've exercised it bar finding plastic bits (its happened) in the mechanism you won't be able to user service it.

    The second is the 'correction'.

Both are cycling, can't tell if the shutter is coming home but no obvious sticking from 25% playback.

Whats your shutter count (you can use https://www.camerashuttercount.com/ )?

    6400, which shouldn't be a problem?

    Basically brand new.

There are some DIY fixes that can be attempted but nothing Id do on holiday. Seems to be quite common that the gear in the base of the camera gets a bit sticky causing poor cycling.

Time to practice your phone photography, think of it as a photo challenge.

It can be shutter, curtain or position sensor problem. Nobody will tell you exactly. The only way is to disassemble and check every part. Just don't do any of those stupid tricks like put some oil inside camera/shutter or drop on carpet. You just will make more damage.
