Owe Revenue money after requesting Balancing Statement!

Teacher with uncomplicated & (usually) predictable taxes. I submitted my medical expenses online for 2015 (approx. 100 euro) and requested my balancing statement for that year. I was really surprised to discover that I owe Revenue 600 euro. I've been teaching continuously for 16 years and usually the discrepancy is a few euro. The only thing that I notice was different for 2015 was that there was 53 weeks so in 2016 I could claim some refund which I did. I know that the above details look sketchy but I don't have my documents to hand atm. Any suggestions as to the reason why 2015 might be so different from other years?

Looks like the week 53 has complicated things. Send an enquiry via my enquiries to ask them to look at the week 53 issue.

I'm not a teacher but had a similar experience in the last few weeks.

I called them up and like the previous poster said the 53 weeks for 2015 was the issue. They resolved it over the phone and the underpayment then became an overpayment. Got the rebate a few days later.

Did you do any additional work during the year. Correcting papers etc etc...I know of two teachers that had exactly the same issue. They were paid for additional work but were taxed on the additional income on an emergency basis. This led to the additional liability.

No extra work. Nothing different from any other year

Did you claim your flat rate expenses? €518 for a teacher if I remember correctly.

Rang Revenue. Waiting ages but New Years Eve. Told them that I thought that the unusual sum owing was due to the 53 weeks issue. He checked and confirmed this was the case. Thanks everyone for your help-I did not need a bill of 600 at this (or any) time of the year!
