Soundbar working, not with tv though

Hi, I received a gift of a soundbar for xmas, and although I can sync bluetooth and have it play from other devices, when I connect it to my TV via HDMI there is no sound. The HDMI is definitely working as i took it from my apple tv box. Is there something else missing that I need?
