May go shopping for a 191 A4 or Passat but not till near end of first quarter.
Will wait to see how Brexit pans out and what dealers have to offer.

Waiting to see what will happen after Brexit, hoping this will push up the price of 2nd hand cars here so will get a better trade in price.

Will be looking at getting into a 3L petrol BMW, either the new M340i or else a used 540i touring.

Looked at the new AUDI A6, but the dealership never got back to me with any kind of price and I didn't bother following up with them. Also will look at the XC90 T8 and the Touraeg which looks pretty class I think, especially with the black pack.

My wifes car will be upgraded as well, its the much higher priority so my plans could be postponed for a year. She has a golf currently, woukd like to get her a GTi or look at one of the smaller SUV types like a 3008 or even 5008.

The FIL has a new Crafter on order for January, that's about as exciting as it's getting for 2019 really.

Got an Audi a6 c7 for the fiance yesterday. Well, she got it with my guidance.
2014 S Line 2.0d to sit alongside my 2014 530d f10 m sport I got a couple of months ago. Took it home yesterday plenty of driving in it today its a lovely machine. Apart from the power difference (which is only noticeable when putting foot down) it's as nice a car as the BMW.
I won't be changing either for 4/5 years unless there's problems with driving diesels before then, which I doubt. BMW has 70,000kms the Audi is under 60,000 kms they'll do for a long time. Incidentally both 2014s cost us less than either of the cars would cost new.

So my plan for the new year is to sell a 2006 e60 523i m sport with as little hassle and messers as possible! So if anyone is interested.....

My Octavia Combi turns 19 in 2019.
It got 4 tyres this year.
I'm gonna get it serviced in April, NCT it in May and ride it into 2020 like Lady Godiva.(Naked and protesting the opressive taxation imposed on me!)

She better keep hers in as good nick as mine....kinda like the idea of chopping and changing between the two of them, although she thinks Audi is in a different class. Always liked these 2 big German saloons and a bit of a dream now to have access to them both.

I don't actually know. It's 8 speed anyway does that give you an answer? It has the paddles to change gear too and the usual auto gearbox, with sports mode and manual as well as normal drive mode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

S-tronics are usually 7 speed, could be 6 speed depending on the year as well.

Quick Google makes me think it's the multitronic in this car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,517 ✭✭✭Azatadine

I'd say so. Only cars from late 2014 were Stronic/Ultra. I know a few with multitronic and they are very happy with the multitronic.

An impending move abroad will mean driving my trusty Volvo for another 6 months and then it will hopefully be something ridiculous to take advantage of 40c a litre petrol.

Multitronic has quite a bad reputation on the reliability front. It's CVT so that's always a reason to dislike it, I hate the slipping clutch feel one gets from driving a car with this type of gearbox.

I know but he's just bought the car and likes it. Also , it seems like most of the issues were sorted by the end of the multitronic run anyway.

It doesn't feel much different to the BMW gearbox in my opinion. Or the one in my old e60. Or either of the e39s I had.
Just feels like an auto to me.

Bought my Ioniq EV this year so I don't foresee any change in my daily (unless I get moved house next year in which case I will look to buy a Tesla)
Will surely pick up another random classic/modern old car in the near future.

Missus picking up Ateca in early Jan. 1.0 petrol, red SE.

Got a very good trade in on my car.

Therefore I'm getting a 2014 kuga (hers), low mileage and the titanium X so leather and sunroof.

Be getting valeted and remapped. OK car and will do fine for 18 months or so. Then I'll be keeping eyes open for something quicker and nicer.

Giving serious consideration to buying a 2016(ish) Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GX4H - I'm still in the browsing phase but going to see 2 of them tomorrow. I would appreciate any advice anyone has on things to look out for or to check for or any advise from people who own one? (I know is a current phased major recall for the brake system and ECU updates. I'm also aware there is a wiper armature recall). Switching from driving a 2011 2 liter diesel Toyota Avensis which I've grown ever so bored of, despite the fact not a single thing has ever once gone wrong with the car and I've mechanically maintained it perfectly :o but I've gone from doing longer distances to more city based distances plus Limerick to Kerry once a week. It's only a matter of time before the city driving murders it :(

Picking up a Lexus CT 200 Executive for herself in February. The 09 A6 will be retired after long and faithful service.

Good few threads over on the EV forum about them.
General consensus seems to be to go for GX4 minimum (ie avoid 3).
If you're doing 30-40 km per day or less then you will really enjoy driving most of the time on EV mode.

I've gone back to University so most of my travel is now from one side of Limerick to the other. However I won't be able to install a home charger in my current home so I'll be charging it using the granny cable for a bit... am I setting my self up for failure by charging using granny cable each evening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,913 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

If you have your own driveway I don't see why you would be?

I ran a Nissan leaf for nearly a year and 50k km on only a granny cable at home!

Yeah I can park it in the drive - I was just concerned that charging from granny cable as a medium term solution was a terrible idea (I got abused on an outlander forum for suggesting I'll be charging it using a granny cable). I simply can't get a charger installed where I'm currently living! This takes a bit of anxiety away, thanks!

Some conflicting information about them on the EV forum though - Some posters suggesting the petrol engine doesn't charge the battery (?). Being new to the whole EV/Hybrid thing is daunting :pac:

Back to back would you not find the 4 cylinder very rough compared to the 6 cylinder BMW?
To me, regardless of power, the 6 cylinder is a beautiful thing compared to 4.

This times 1000. IMO there is no comparison whatsoever, there is just such a lovely feel from a six cylinder engine, they sound lovely when you give them some welly, and they're super smooth.

Contemplating moving herselfs 520d in the coming months. Potential job move for her would mean she didn't warrant a diesel anymore. Looking at importing a 15-17 IS300H or 330e. Only thing holding me back is the 5er is quite well specced for an SE and is a nice yoke to travel in.

I'm slowly accumulating all the parts I need to do retrofits on the 330d, can't see it going anywhere for a while as it's a great all rounder for my needs.

No real plans myself for 2019.

Only have my current car since last April and will be spending money on other non car related projects this year. Was thinking of doing some cheap subtle modifications alright like changing the front chrome kidney grill to black but having seen one on a car the same colour as mine I'm just not gone on it. The black grill seems to work better with more contrasting paint colours rather than similar imo.

Every year on this thread I make plans and end up doing the opposite. So going to say no plans for 2019. A4 is 3 years old now but still very fresh with only 50k km on it plus it’s very well specced for an A4.

Not really I thought I might but it's fine. Such a refined car the a6 you can feel nothing. Same as the 5 series 530d it's all luxury, insulation and opulence now rather than driving feel in my opinion.
My last 4 cars have been a 2001 e39 530i sport, 2004 e39 525i sport, 2006 e60 523i msport and now the f10 530d msport. The Audi is as nice to drive as any of them, its as fast as the e60 but probably a bit behind the other 3, although it's a bit nose heavier going into corners at speed but she won't be doing that at all.
It's honestly a toss up if I was to pick either in the morning going back to work, I'll be sticking to the BMW mainly though.
