Meidcal insurance relief

My employer funds my health insurance. The package also provides for a lower plan for my wife which I top up to bring up to the same level as mine and 50% of each childs plan is also funded. In my case I have 2 kids.

My wife and I are assessed jointly. Looking at my tax credit certificate I can see that I get 400 euro medical insurance relief and my wife gets 0. I am trying to work out if the 400 euro is for both of us or if I can also claim relief for her as well.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Relief for medical insurance breaks down like this:

Lets say your total premium for the year was €2500, for two adults.

You are entitled to claim relief on €1000 per adult. So you can claim relief on €2000.

The relief is given at 20%, which means that for two adults, you are entitled to €400 maximum. So it's €200 each, not €400 each. So the €400 is for both of you.

You also need to be sure that you are not getting the relief already at source - check with your employer as to whether this particular arrangement is not already being given relief at source before you claim it.
