Large 7 Seater Fuel Consumption

Just looking for some guidelines. I have a 141 Ford Galaxy 2ltr Titanium Auto Diesel.

Most of my driving is small runs, shops/schools/etc. Not ideal for a diesel but no real alternative at present.

The issue with the Galaxy is the fuel comsumption. Running according to the computer at about 8.X majority of the time. Never goes above 8.5 I do admit

When we bought the other option was Alhambra, just wondering what people are seeing from it? also what other options would make sense if I want to reduce fuel

    Thanks

In old money that’s 35mpg and isn’t bad at all for city runs- the Galaxy is a massive machine, and I can’t see you get better economy in anything that size, especially an auto. A petrol Galaxy/ similar sized machine would be worse again. I had the Sharan rented and it was v heavy in juice around town

The most economical 7 seven seater for short runs is a Prius 7 seater, so if that was big enough for you it would be a good option. V few around so you’d have to import, but vrt is extremely low and they are v reliable and cheap to run

AFAIK, diesels reach their optimum level of efficiency when they are in top gear and on the open road.

City driving with all its start stop driving doesn't work as well for them in terms of fuel efficiency.

Prius is too small, really a hybrid/PHEV would be perfect but nothing available

BEV would be ideal but I think I will be waiting till 2022 for that option

No DPF issues in the Diesel Galaxy with the short runs?

If you need that size car then stick with the Galaxy. No other petrol or hybrid option I think is feasible

It look like diesel is only option

The Misses always liked the Alhambra, we couldntget one when swapping and I think she wants a change

Just wondering any chance it would be any more fuel efficient? just wondering what people are seeing

Our Sharan (150 dsg) has an average 8.1l and that’s a mix of city and country driving. Honestly, I think the Galaxy is doing well for the driving you describe.

Edit to say I’d a Galaxy for a week in November (Powershift, no idea about power) and found it slightly worse for economy.

    5 seater in phev
7 seater in diesel version but significantly smaller than a galaxy.

That was the option we looked at but not a 7 seater. It would be big enough as boot space is the big requirement, just a pity the battery takes up the back 2 seats

Ok so the Sharan/Alhambra would be similar to the Galaxy, nothing in it. I expected as much as both vehicles are similar size

So that excuse to swap is out the window

So it will be brought back to the integrated boosters and the sliding doors :P

must check my S-max but the 2.0 ltr 163 was best for economy

141, 2.0 diesel, 140 BHP s-max average is 7.8l, mix of city school runs and motorway weekend trips!

We had an SMAX, replaced it with the Galaxy for more space. I would prefer the SMAX as it is nice to drive compared to the Transit, sorry Galaxy.

I said to Miss Shefwedfan the Alhmabra done the same ltr/100 as Galaxy....Nose just got turned up....so I said why don't we just keep it for another 2 years and trade it in....silence...

To throw her a bone, I asked "Well what advantage would it be to swap to Alhambra now"...answer "the boosters would be a huge advantage and worth swapping now ":p

I tried to say something else, just got the look and was told "you should have bought an Alhambra instead of this"...special voice used for the "this"

So that's it, it is my fault.....

I think people get slightly caught up on fuel consumption.

In old money you're getting 35mpg. In something that size 45mpg (6.2 l) would be very good.

Your driving is all short city stuff so a max 9f say 15000km a year?

    You'd save about 300 quid a year if achieving 6.2 or 45mpg.

Cost of change and depreciation are far far bigger costs.

    Toyota Estima Hybrid? (import)
I've an 8 seater one myself, X-Four drivetrain. 2.4 ltr

I'll have to check later but get about 31/32 mpg, alot of motorway driving so would likely be alot higher on shorter runs where there's more usage of the battery.

All those short trips unfortunately add up. Have car 16 months and 26k miles on it. So just over 40k km's. So about 30k km's per year.

Not really hung up on consumption, as mentioned I think she is using as a reason to swap the car as really she wants the Alhambra/Sharan.

My choice to swap, when it came out I was over with her at the Peugeot dealer asking for a test. Some of the staff didn't even realise they had one....

She had one look and kicked to touch. It might be option now 16 months on.

How can 30k a year be composed of just short trips? That's 125km a day.

Seems priced a little high at 20k for a 2012.

I know it's hybrid and all but dropping 2 years and paying money just doesn't compute :P
