Tip for buying from a small company's website

A few months ago I ordered a fairly expensive item from a small company. I googled the company and found nothing that seemed dodgy.
A few weeks later, when delivery wasn't happening, I googled the name of the company's principal. Quite a different picture - he had had significant financial problems in the past. I probably would have been warned-off by what I saw.
In the end I managed to get about 90% of what I ordered and paid a fair price, but I found it quite stressful.
So, if in doubt, check the name of the proprietor before you order.

Mod: You already have 2 threads merged about the same issue on Consumer Issues. Please keep it all there, and don’t open new threads.
