    Hi All,

    I have a Dell Inspiron 17" , 5749 laptop which wont boot.
It is well out of warranty (2015)
When turning on it was dead with no post or fans but it was charging the battery.
So i stripped out the HDD,wifi card, ram and optical drive, this made no difference. Then I swapped out the CMOS battery, rebuilt and now on boot up it is beeping 7 times but still no boot up screen though hdd and fans are spinning.

7 beeps = CPU Cache test failure -Processor failure

Cpu seems to be soldered on the motherboard.

The beeps occur with battery only/adaptor only.

    Any ideas welcome.

You've done about as good a diagnostic job as anyone. And if the CPU is dead, then effectively the machine is dead. As you noted, the soldered CPU means that in order to get it replaced you have to replace the whole motherboard which is usually an expensive proposition.

Looking on ebay, there are a lot for sale in the 150-200 range, but there are also a lot of this generation board for sale as 'spares or repairs' which makes me wonder if there is some inherent problem with these boards. It just means that there is no guarantee that you will get much/any life out of a new board.

Shouldn't be happening on a machine that old tbh. Seems very premature. If it were me I would not repair and start looking for a new machine. You may find good value second hand too.
