New Clerical officer - maternity cover

    Hiya guys

I have just completed my first week as a clerical officer with the HSE and I feel completely overwhelmed.

I had assumed, possibly foolishly, that as a new entrant I would be doing entry level tasks and would receive training.

However the position I now have is maternity cover and I am expected to smoothly take over from an employee who has been in the job for years as the personal assistant to a person high up in the organisation.

The people are all very nice but there has been no training so far and there is no plan to do any. I have no experience with all the computer software. I just wasn't expecting something like this as a new entrant.

I am just feeling overwhelmed and stressed and need to vent

Did you have relevant office experience for the role? I would suggest speaking to your manager and asking can someone go through the system with you as you haven't worked with this particular system before.

No I don't really have any previous office/admin experience.

I don't mean to sound negative I just needed to vent out some fustration.

Is it a entry level position, what grade is position? Were you upfront about your lack of experience? If it is entry level they should be guiding and helping you but perhaps they think you've got experience and don't need assistance. If you don't say something then how are they to know you need guidance. You need to speak with your manager or a colleague you feel comfortable with for some help. Don't be afraid to ask, I'm sure your colleagues wouldn't want you struggling.

There are two people in the office, one off which is away 2/3 days and the other doesn't work Mondays so there isn't really any resources to provide designated training.

Yes I was clear from the initial application stage that I had very little admin experience.

From what I have gathered they needed to get someone in before the new year so they could secure funding, and I had all my documents in order so I was first in the list.

Everyone has been really nice, and they are approachable, so hopefully I won't fcuk up
