I should have stated budget of E900 or thereabouts, laptop, Windows. Mostly emails, work access externally, browsing, small bit of Word, Excel and possibly viewing GIS stuff. Autocad is at prelim/learning stage

What Lenovo were you looking at? Do you have a link? There's a tonne of thinkpads. I would think a larger screen would be of value here, as autocad on a small screen would seem to be a bad idea.

    Thanks Alan
I was going to get a bigger monitor for the CAD and just lrsn on the laptop. An XI Carbon ThinkPad is what I have in mind.

no chance of a carbon thinkpad for 900 tbh unless it's second-hand

starts at €1555 on the site

    https://www.lenovo.com/ie/en/laptops/thinkpad/x-series/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-6th-Gen/p/22TP2TXX16G

this dell is well-made (all-metal and narrow screen bezels) and with a good 4-core i5 and 256gb ssd, 8gb ram

    https://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/laptops/inspiron-13-7000-laptop/spd/inspiron-13-7380-laptop?view=configurations

not much benefit in the i7 over the i5 perf wise (~8% perf - wouldn't notice)

has newer faster chips than the carbon also

with the 50 off voucher mentioned (XMAS50) . on the site you could get for 800 euro. (until dec 26)

nice quality laptop that is light at 1.3kg

I'd get an older ThinkPad with full spec and a docking station tbh. Something like a t450 with and i7 and 16gb ram with graphics card and then get a nice monitor.

You want something reliable workhorse with good battery life.

Fancy stuff like thickness etc isn't really cutting it value for money wise.

    Get a rebuilt machine.

The old i5 and i7 u mobile chips are only two core chips. Way down on cpu power compared to the recent ones.

He's running cad it's no need for excessive powered hungry quad cores.

Value for money wise a solid i7 and a good 27 inch monitor would be better.

The tdp is no higher due to efficiency improvements with lower cpu die sizes.
