Dealers advertising sh!tters

Looked at half a dozen cars the past days for my sister, talk about sh!t dragged from the auctions and polished up with a for sale sign on them. End of year shed sale...... Opel Corsas, Peugeot 207s with noisy mufflers, strange squeaks, scraped bumpers, parking dents everywhere, torn seats, bald tyres, generally unserviced sh!t boxes with a promise of a service upon sale. Whats wrong with dealers that they wont fix this sh!te prior to putting it on display? Granted these cars we looked at were not from big showrooms but none the less.... No one is gonna pay a deposit for the crap I seen, especially today. One Peugeot 207 in particular had a noisy engine bottom end bearing, the dealer said, "really didn't notice that"... Ok man what did your 2 mechanics standing over there say before putting it up for sale?

At a certain price level you’re just better off avoiding dealers.

Why bother putting money into something that they can't shift? TBH, what price point were you looking at, and what part of the country are you in?

Have a look at this Bangernomics thread. Something might catch your eye.

Outside of the bangernomics thread there is some absolute shíte out there. I've looked in the €5-7k point. My sister had to sift through dozens of knackered small paddy spec hatches. 10 years old, 120,000km+, covered in dents etc. Hard to believe cars that are €12-14k new are apparently still worth half that a decade later in rag order. Both dealer and private, were the same crap.

For something that depreciates as much as cars, people certainly seem to think they hold their value.

As Colm said if your looking at cheap examples of particular models then your dredging the bottom of the market where the characters selling the cars are as questionable as the cars they are selling. That can apply to both dealers and private sellers.

Get a decent Suzuki swift auto import for small money, with warranty, rust free,2 yrs NCT, wouldn't bother with DD etc

Because its not economical to do so. Simple as that.

The margin on used cars isn't nearly what people think it is, and every scuff and dent repaired is going to come out of that margin so is it really surprising that a business is going to try and minimise its costs?

3k was the budget, Just bought a 2010' Peugeot 207 just now and it's in great condition. It was a private sale from a woman in swords. I'm driving it back down the south side now for my sis. It's worlds WORLDS apart from the sh!t I seen at dealers earlier. No scrapes, dents or slipping clutches going on here. Cheap car at 2.2k!

The problem is that more people are willing to buy these cars, as can be seen by the far too regular threads on this forum, than are willing to walk away.

Many years ago I was looking at a car and it had 4 different tyres with 2 just legal. I asked the dealer for a discount for 4 new tyres and his reply was that they were legal, needless to say I walked but someone bought it with the dodgy tyres.

If people are willing to be buy cars with no NCT off a garage why would they bother to fix them.

That's what you normally get from dealers in that price range. The market dictates the value of the car so it's about maximising their profit which means spending as little or nothing on the cars they sell in that price range otherwise it's not worth it.

Well done on that.Time has to be spent at that price range to weed out crap.Rest assured a deale r would have put that on sale for upwards of 3750.

+1 and then they come whinging here when their clapped-out banger gets a dent, the insurance company writes it off and offers them one-third what they claim it's worth.

+1 as long as there are mugs out there who swallow the 'we'll guarantee the NCT' sales pitch, there will be dodgy dealers selling sh1te cars as described above.

Peope have the attitude that this type of dealer is 'in the trade' so he must know what he's talking about when all he is is a con-man flogging a defective product at an inflated price. And making promises about warranty, NCT etc. that he has no intention of fulfilling.

No sh1te boxes or spaceship mileage. Kitted & bagged would be nice. Cheap to insure for 17y/o

At 5-7k id be looking in Japan myself, My missus just imported herself in that range very recently, condition and mileage is ridiculous compared to what she was looking here. Depending on the car your after there`s definitely bargains to be had.

Going JDM restricts the companies that you can get insurance quotes from. No point in saving on the car to struggle for a decent quote.

Good few Japanese imports around my area, Yaris, Prius etc. Some of them are driven by housewives who have taken the L plates off because they very clearly cannot drive. Insurance doesn't seem be that difficult to get!

I was surprised to see so many around as I've seen quite a few people in here saying it's difficult to get insurance.

We had absolutely no problem getting insurance, and quotes were no different from an Irish car, Albeit the car in question is not manufactured in Japan (VW) , but we have had JDM only cars also and had no problem insuring them either.

No issue here either.Fully comp with protected ncb,€450 with allianz on a jdm honda. No difference on the "Irish" car that went before it.
