    Hi guys

Hoping someone can throw a few ideas around.

Today whilst parked I got an overwhelming smell of fumes which was like sulfer in my car. Got out of the car immediately and the outside of the car reeked. I have a headache since.

I am hoping to get it to garage tomorrow but wondering has anyone got experience with this happening. It's a 132 bmw x1
    Thanks a million

Either a dodgy catalytic converter or it's going through a regen I'd say.

    Is it diesel or petrol?

    Diesel

Are they expensive jobs if it's the above that's wrong? Can't believe this right before christmas

    Had you the window open?

If not...there's a recall on certain engines for an EGR cooler. I'd call your dealer before driving it again.

Battery? Had a alternator fault on a car once which overcharged the battery resulting in a horrible smell of sulphur as the battery acid boiled

Exhaust flexi in the down pipe would be my guess or do these suffer cracked manifolds like the x5s

    Dealer straight away.

No matter the cause nothing like that will be healthy for you, potentially dangerous even short term

BMW have a recall out for a faulty EGR cooler that can potentially cause a fire in some isolated cases. I'd be getting onto your local BMW dealer asap to have it checked.

    Thanks all for your replies.

I have contacted BMW via email. Received an email back saying they understood my concerns. They're currently looking into whether my car was part of a recall. I can imagine with it being christmas, I'll have to wait till new new.

I took it the advance pit stop today as I drove it around the corner to see how it was after being left over night. The smell of fumes was unbearable and I began to get a headache.

They took it for a spin and said it was the clutch and flywheel that was gone. Ball park figure of €850. €850 that I just don't have at the moment. So for now, it is parked up outside my house where it will remain until I can get it sorted.

I'm not telling BMW that the clutch is gone. I'm going to await their reply first and also planning on shopping around on price for a replacement.

Quick Google price was throwing up 630 for the clutch and flywheel kit.

If you have to drive it, put the air on recirculate rather than coming in from the outside - should help a bit with the fumes.

Also, don't ever go to a tyre centre for anything more than tyres or possibly an exhaust. I'd be very surprised if the clutch could release fumes bad enough to give you a headache and doubt the root cause is the clutch.

This happens lead batteries when they are fúcked, release of Hydrogen Sulfide (smell of rotten eggs) and can be fatal from inhalation

ROR has pointed out that clutch or flywheel not likely to emit such fumes. Would smell though.

Anyway IF it is. Why would your first reaction be to just sell.

You've stayed you dont have €850 right now.
The most expensive thing you could do with a broken down 2013 x1 is sell it.

Never said anything about selling it. Just have the car a year and have finance so it is with me for another for years at least. Was talking about shopping around for prices on the parts.

It's due it's service anyway. So will leave it in for a service and see what they come back with. Still waiting to hear back from BMW
