Buying a car on the continent...

Am having one of those moments where I consider packing it all in and go travelling for a year or even two...

Would it be possible to buy a second hand car on the continent, drive it through different countries for a year and bring it back to Ireland?

Where would be a good cheap place for second hand cars? Do I need an address in that country to register the car? Would I be able to tax and insure it easily? Would I need to pay VRT on my return to Ireland?

The plan would be to leave Europe with it... But it's all high level stuff at the moment, just looking for general ideas...

    Not Your Ornery Onager

It will be LHD, which afaik will incur an insurance loading, as well as being a pain when trying to overtake on normal roads here.

Lol... Not sure it'll be fast enough for any overtaking... But anyways

The problem with insurance here is that they will only cover you upto 90 days abroad at a time. I'd imagine that any country you drive it in would also request that it have a valid certificate of roadworthiness too (ie valid NCT). Motor tax I'm not sure about but I'd guess motor tax is only needs to be valid in the country it is issued in while your there.

Take under consideration that second hand cars are much more expensive on the Continent than in Ireland or UK.
For instance 12 year old car which you might get in Ireland in good condition for €1000, might cost you €3000 on the Continent.

With registering and insuring the car, it varies country to country. Some might require you to be resident there before you can register and insure a car in your name. Some don't.

Poland has quite chilled out regulations, where you can buy a second hand car, and you can take it with you without re-registering in your name. Previous owner's insurance policy will be still valid for you, so ideally you'd want to buy the car with nearly full 12 months policy. That way you could go for your travels around Europe and beyond.
