Avoiding paying toll in express lanes

Have noticed this a few times. If there are 2 cars in front of me in the toll express lane lets say the car closest to me doesn't have a tag and manages to get through the toll as soon as my tag is picked up by the sensor and the barrier lifts. Are they avoiding having to pay the toll by doing this? I got annoyed with the carry on and recently I saw a van in front was trying to avoid paying the toll so I slowed right down and avoided setting off the sensor so he had to turn left and pay the toll because the barrier wouldn't lift.

I assume they are, otherwise why do it.

I use the M1 toll a lot and always wait until I see that the vehicle in front has a green arrow before proceeding past the sensor. Usually the vehicle behind is doing the same to me.

I've seen a few cars in front then have to leave the express lane as the barrier stayed down.

Happens a far bit on the M4 as well, a few people have tried it with me behind them. Hasn't worked so far as I'll put a decent gap between us before hitting the sensor.

Cars behind are a bit trickier though

Happened to me on the M8. They sped up right behind me the barrier didnt like and slammed down. I had to slam on the breaks and that dope nearly slammed into me. It's 2 euro!

first time I saw it happening, was when I came up to the toll and there was a car sitting in front of the barrier waiting. It didn't click with me until I went past the sensor and it raised for them and closed in front of me!.. :(
I had to exit the express and go through another lane, but I checked with the operator you don't get charged twice within some time limit!

so now I wait til the car in front goes green alright

The toll barrier itself at watergrasshill is a heap of **** and there are a couple of assholes out there making use if it.

Just as you approach the Express lane they shoot over in front of you.

You go through toll and they are between you and barrier to get through on your tag.

Fooled me one morning. I was pissed at him jumping in front of me and was quite tight behind him. Got a barrier in my way.

Couple cars have tried since and I've had to stand on breaks in Express lane and hope whoever is behind slows too. ****ers will sit there a few seconds hoping to con you.

I now never go through the tag until clear to barrier. I notice a lot do the same

M8 and limerick tunnel have same brand of toll bridge. Crap and v slow to react

Does this only happen at rush hour or something? I go through tolls a lot during the day, pretty much all off peak, and never see it.

Never seen it, but then I'm not looking out for it. Frankly, I prefer not to have to be braking hard to avoid setting a sensor off, if someone gets through ahead of me without paying and without causing me danger, so be it. Its nothing personal to me, and it's for the owners of the toll bridge to resolve.

M8 I've only seen it at 7.30 in morning.

Well I went thru watergrasshill a lil too fast once and the barrier didn't go up. It was rainy and greasy on the road and I had a super long skid and stopped about 2inches beyond the barrier..... So I hit the barrier at a super slow speed. It rises automatically on contact and has about 3 inches of foam on it. If people want to avoid just hit the barrier.... Much easier than waiting for someone behind to tag them in

Ah but on M8 if they go through on your tag you think you've got the green arrow and the barrier will drop in your face. It's just a crsp system.

No braking required, just ease off the accelerator and let a gap build up to the car in front. Once I see they've got a green arrow its back on the accelerator. The car behind often does the same.

I've had the barrier on the M1 hit the top of my car when the van in front took my arrow, while it is covered in foam it still makes a hell of a racket and frightend the ****e out of me.

    Learned my lesson that morning.

    . It's just a crsp system.

That's like saying shops leaving stuff on shelves for people to steal is a crap system.

Caught one b*ll*x trying that this morning, slowed right down in time so the barrier wouldn't lift for him.

You had an arrow yet it slammed because there were two cars trying to go through?

No the actual M8 toll system is crap.
It's cheap slow and poor to no reg recognition.

M7 M1 and Waterford are best. Dearer system but worth it in my opinion.

Is the tag linked to a reg number or a person, either way the toll operator would have the reg of the car that snuck through on someone else's tag.. And can send bills same as M50 can...

    M7 M1 and Waterford

M7, M1 happens almost every day for me.

Waterford, nobody knows how to use the toll at all.

M4 not so bad, only westbound, never had it happen it eastbound.

Happens me loads too. Used to it now so you can spot it and hang back. If someone is up my hole I just use one of the basket lanes.

Not a very good idea as the whole thing is covered by cameras and even number plate recognition.

If they want to go after people they certainly can do it without much difficulty as it'll all be there on recordings linked to the timing of the double tag scans.
