Moving from civil to public service? Contract end/start dates

Any moved from the civil service to an agency/public sector? Just seeing what I need to do or what is involved in "resigning" like this, single pension scheme so think that's straight forward enough but is there any thing else I should consider?

Also a question on start dates/end dates. I'd like to take a week off between the two roles - should I try take this as holidays in my current role (e.g. last day of work is the 7th but really contract runs to the 14th when the new contract starts) or does a gap being "unemployed" for a week like that matter?

In relation to resigning, you should hand in your notice in writing as your notice period formally starts from then.

I made the move from the Civil Service to a Public Service agency and eventually went back to the Civil Service. A senior manager warned me not to "break service" when I was returning to CS, he indicated that it could have some implications for my pension. So I literally finished on the Friday and commenced in new role on the Monday with no break.

I don't know if the advice was valid or not but I wasn't willing to take any chances. That was over 10 years ago so the policy could have changed by now. Otherwise, you could contact your HR section, PeoplePoint or union they might be in a position to help.

Interesting this - is it still possible to move from Civil Service to a Public Service agency and back to the Civil Service i.e. is it effectively the equivalent of moving from one Civil Service department to another on promotion in terms of service?

I always thought if you left the Civil Service you could not return (without great difficulty).

    Thanks.

You can move either way now - in theory. That new scheme is in for a few years, but I doubt if it has mushroomed yet.

Both moves were as a result of promotion by way of open competition. However, when I returned to the Civil Service it was a sideways move and quite a gamble, but it paid off fortunately.

Was it by way of external competitions?
