How did Chromecast do that?

Last Saturday night we were watching a netflix film on TV via chromecast from my phone. About an hour into the film I had to leave to pick up one of the kids, 15 miles away. When I got back I realised that I'd taken the phone with me, but the film had continued playing on the TV until it ended... how the feck does that work?

Once you have the film on the tv, the phone then is only used as a remote control.

Your phone became the remote, you never switched it off/pressed stop!

Does the film download to the chromecast dongle?

No, it just streams the content

As others have said above, he was streaming via the Chromecast and the phone is only used for volume etc.

There are apps that enable local playback of files on the phone, but OP was taking about Netflix

I watch films last thing at night and I usually turn my phone off after I've pressed play. It doesn't affect playback, but eventually the Chromecast will ask "Are you still there?" before going into standby.

That's just how it works. When you cast using Netflix, YouTube etc, all you're actually doing is sending a command to the Chromecast to "play this video". The Chromecast will then use its inbuilt Netflix app to start streaming the video. The content doesn't actually go through your phone at all. It just sends commands to start, pause, stop etc.

There are exceptions to this, like obviously if you're mirroring your phone screen then that's coming directly from your phone, and it is possible to cast videos straight from your phone too.

This applies to the browser as well. You might notice that if have youtube open and cast the entire chrome tab, performance will be much worse than if you cast just the video. Casting the tab is streaming the content from your computer. Casting the video via the youtube cast button is just sending a command to the chromecast to start streaming via its own YouTube app.

Yea, to put it as simple as possible

You open youtube (Or most cast sites) on your fone,
You cast a video to chrome cast,

What actually happens is it sends the link of the video to chrome cast and chrome cast opens its own session of what your watching.
    Hence the remote comments,
When you pause on your fone, it just sends a pause command.
