He's hardly being 'populist' by wanting to cripple motorists with a crazy new fines & penalty points system.

Could be exploiting the grief of victims, without serious analysis.....

He knows he won't be in government again, so he wants to be able to say "I did that", before he is gone.

It's much easier to try and create a few new laws than it is to fix the shambles of public transport in Ireland or remember the names of sports people he has no interest in.

    Hope he is successful

As a country we need to look at ourselves seriously. The driving out there is shameful with almost no credence given to speeding or lights.
I think they should fine the sh!t out of road lawbreakers and say it's also going to benefit revenue, what is the problem with getting revenue this way. Why not let them pay lots of revenue as they put lives in danger, damage the roads and environment?

All quite true, however Minister Ross should perhaps be seeking to improve the current shambolic Road Traffic Law implimentation, before embarking on crusades to introduce new regulations, which will still be operated under an outdated Victorian system.

There are so many of the current Road Traffic Act provisions which should be monitored effectively by ANPR,instead of relying upon the physical presence of a Garda.

Equally, the Minister could seek far more professionalism from bodies such as Local Authorities, whose officials appear to be in a permanently dazed & confused state,as can be evidenced by stunts such as the Cycle Lane "Armadillo" segregators at the bottom of Dublin's Leeson Street, the net effect of which has been to significantly Increase danger levels to ALL road-users.

The Country is burdened with madcap schemes such as this, yet Minister Ross appears blissfully unaware of them.......oh well,Vote ROSS,Shane...No 1 :)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

I am no supporter of Shane Ross, He has shown his colours many times and is seriously lacking in presence for any crisis. I will be going past those Armadillos in about 10 mins on a bike and yes WTF are they other than scary to everyone. And yes there is little or no implementation of current laws, when you hear of people with 30++ convictions for driving offenses how can that be, I would struggle to get one as there are no Grada around.
Despite all that applying the speed limits (among many other things) will save lives.
