Toyota Avensis fuel economy

Hi, I drive a 2010 2.0 diesel avensis. I have it since June, but yesterday was the first time I ever filled the tank. Basically when I filled it, I checked the range on the dash and it said only 860km. I thought it would be over the 1000km mark. Anyway, I didn't take much notice and today had to drive a friend up the North and back ( I tipped away at 130kph on the motorway) and basically the 860km range is corresponding....as in that's all I'm going to end up getting for a full tank.
I used drive a 2008 Passat and it was way more economical that the Avensis. I always felt that the Avensis was alot heavier on fuel. Is there something wrong with the car, would ye think, or is that standard for the Avensis.

I have an Avensis petrol, when I first got it a full tank said 550, after about a week of motorway driving (3 fills) it was up to about 620, might be something that rights itself over time. Don't have a diesel but just something I noticed with the Avensis

To get a true figure, fill it up, run it down, fill it again and see how many litres you put in. Then see how many miles you did between filling it last time and now. Plenty of online calculators will work out the mpg/litre per 100 kilometres.

Forget the onboard computer. If it's like my Avensis D4D, they're not that accurate.

The only thing I'd look at is the one measuring the amount left. The distance thing is just maths based on your driving and how much fuel is consumed at the time. A few cars I had would tell me I had more distance to empty at the end of the day, than the start.

size of tank has a bearing on range too. They aren't all the same and the only way to truly compare is to brim the tank and record how many kms you drive and then brim again to work out consumption over that distance.

Tank differs by model, not by individual car. So I'm sure the manufacturer can set that easy enough.

sorry I wasn't referring directly to your post, but to the differnce between a Avensis and the OPs old car.

But does 860km sound low to ye? As in I have 650km done and its saying the range is 220k...which is still very low mileage for a full tank of diesel I think.

Depends on the size of the tank.

Passat has a 70 litre tank, Avensis is 60 litres, so of course it's not going to go as far on a tank as a Passat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 Mickotipp

It's a 60 litre tank according to google.

How many miles did you get to a tank in the old car?

Nope, some cars have different size fuel tanks within the same model.

    Example, B8 A4 had a 40l tank standard with a free option of 54l.

I used get over 1000 km on the Passat. Aside from that, google says I should be getting more than 1000 on the Avensis, according to the spec sheet?

The estimate is based on your previous driving, it will go up or down depending on the driving you’re doing now.

Roughly 45 mpg from the Passat so. You should see similar from the Avensis. If you don't mind me giving you a tip, cruising at 120 or even a bit less will see a noticeable difference in economy regardless of the car. Any more than that and you're dealing with a lot of wind resistance.

I also went from a Passat TDI to an Avensis a while back. I used to get in and around 50mpg from the Passat but I’m only getting 45mpg from the Avensis. I calculated this by brimming the tank. It also has a smaller fuel tank as mentioned above so that probably accounts for the difference you are seeing, it’s not as bad as it seems.

To really be sure what kind of MPG you are getting, fill car to the max. Note the Klms on the clock. Drive away until you need to refill. Again you must fill to the max, and note the klm's. Subtract the 1st mileage from the 2nd one, and you get the total traveled. Divide the Nr of Ltrs by the nr of Klms travelled, and multiply the result by 100. That will give you your consumption figure in ltrs per 100 Klms travelled.

OP, the car's fuel tank range figure in the on board computer is not an accurate indication of your fuel consumption.

have had 2 avensis (tourer) models (2.0 D4d) in the past.

Both behaved the same giving roughly 50-53mpg (5.3l per 100km)

    Currently run a Rav4 (2.0 d4d) - it also gives 53-55mpg (4.8-5.3 l per 100km)

(worth checking tyres, brakes, air filters etc....)

    I've a Citroen C5 and get over 1200 km to a 65L tank

My previous Mondeo 2.0 gave similar performance

Great mileage can be achieved from modern diesels if you drive them a certain way. If your route involves 100kmh roads you will get a lot more than at motorway speeds.

    Like said
    Fill tank to the brim
Let it burp itself out a bit,you will squeeze more in
Then drive like you do normally till you need to fill again
Again brim and burp it till full
Write down the distance you covered
    Use mpg calculator online
U may need to change from Kms to miles
Will give u your true mpg
Then do it over several tanks to get rough mpg
Will get more in summer and slightly less in winter
I keep track of mine to see if car has a problem
I always fill my diesel in same garage so I know it's decent stuff

    Trip one and trip 2?

Brim the tank, reset the trip 2, refill again once empty and calculate mileage that way. I always brim the tank and run it to near empty, I'll know how much range I have left that way on top of the guidance of the display!

Very common on lower end diesel versions of premium German cars these days. The C-class has a 41 litre tank as standard, the new 3 series has a similarly tiny one if you buy a small engined diesel. You can upgrade to a bigger one, at a price of course. The bigger engined diesels and most, if not all, petrol versions still have proper fuel tanks as standard.

On the honest John website it says 47mpg for your car and they are normally quite accurate.

Download the Fuelio app and fill the car consistently at similar times (i.e 1/8th tank, 30km range left etc) and fill up to the same amount each time. You can fill to the click or pull the pump out a little and throw a bit more in.

Try stick to the same filling routine and after a couple of fills it will give you can idea of the fuel economy and distance you can expect to get out of a tank.
