Are old Sky boxes of any use to anyone?

So, clearing out the presses, and came across a few old Sky boxes. Just from past upgrades. Wondering would they be of any use to people, or just dump them into the local WEEE drop-off location?

People sell them on Adverts etc.

Are they HD boxes with or without the hard drive for recording?

The original Sky boxes that still work are kinda handy enough, I think, for maybe playrooms or whatever, as they default to BBC, ITV, etc at top of EPG and have things like CITV, itv2-4, listed on EPG when there's no card.

    No HD channels of course.

Seems just one Sky+ HD DRX780UK. Found three Laurus AVT8030's (Saorview boxes) as well behind it.

Put sky box on Adverts, could be used as an upgrade for an sd box by a sky customer, their existing card can be paired with the HD box. Demand for Saorview boxes is dropping off, newer sets have Saorview tuners. It won't cost anything to put them up, just the time.

Yup. Not near enough the border to pick up the HD channels that may leak over.

Them old sky boxes are handy for bbc on the red button. Just thinking off Wimbledon and the Snooker.

Nah, being near the border wont affect the channels you get through a Sky box. If its not a HD box then you wont pick up HD channels regardless of where you are. Terrestrial TV channels (Freeview) via rooftop aerial is what you're probably thinking of.

Sorry, I meant that the three Laurus AVT8030's were meant to be useful if you're near the border for the UK channels.

The Sky box is a Sky+ HD box.

I bought one of these old sky boxes so I could receive the eir/bt channels. I had to get a card from eir to get the channels.

I also use it to watch bbc, c4 or itv the odd time.

I had a combo box but don't need it now unless I watch rte. It is only in a bedroom anyway so only only occasional viewing.

If any have useful HDDs then strip those out and make use of them.
    Dump the rest.

Alternatively, sell them ...... there are always people who waste money on things like this.
