i've a 10 years old mondeo diesel, and just today it started to make a thump noise when changing gears and when accelerating there is a grinding nosie

its fine when i'm driving on the motorway and dont change gear

also when i turn off the engine there is a vibrate?

the brakes were all done 2 months ago

could it be the gearbox or clutch? if its something expensive i think i'll just leave it and buy a car

Engine or gearbox mount? Try rocking the engine back and forth by hand, before you start the car. If the mounts are all good then there shouldn't be much movement. If any of the mounts are gone, you'll notice a lot more movement than you'd expect.

Had a gearbox mount go in a much older Mondeo years ago, and had similar to what you described.

Mounts would be my guess too. they deteriorate over time and do make a thumping noise when changing gears.

Generally if you’re getting heavy vibrations on start up and knocking it off you’re looking at a dual mass flywheel, I wouldn’t recommend getting it changed to a solid fly wheel unless you hate your gearbox.

Grinding could be a number of things, if you’ve got a weak link in the system it’s going to cause wear on items that come in and out of mesh and on anything that has a bit of backlash (high mileage?)
It could be synchro/balk rings, could be the helical gears themselves. Is it ever hard to find a certain gear or group of gears?
