Wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if there is a way to sort it. I bought a go pro in Currys early last year, am away at the moment and it's broke so have sent it back to my parents for them to get a replacement from Currys. However DHL won't deliver saying 80 euro has to be paid, 14.50 of which they will get..

Had my parents explain the situation, that we already own it, was bought in Ireland and it's for replacing but apparently both DHL and customs don't wana know. Can anything be done but pay the 80 and try explain the situation again over email with the receipts and that? Have said we can send them the original receipt now but they are still having none of it.

where did you send it from, what value did you put on it and how did you describe it?

Sent from Thailand, put 220 as the value and ticked a box for returned goods. Wanted to genuinely do it by the book to avoid a situation like this.

First thing I would do is succinctly summarise your situation into a form you can quickly copy and paste into emails and chats or have in front of you if you're on the phone to DHL. Bullet points would be best, include details such as waybill number, date of shipment, invoice number (ie the invoice for €80) etc.
Also have electronic copies of any documentation so you can attach to emails

Second, I'd get onto DHL again by email ( ie.imports@dhl.com ), explaining that these are goods of Irish origin being returned for repair and include a copy your proof of purchase.

( Alternative emails addresses are ie.vat@dhl.com or ievatsupport@dhl.com - they probably all end up in the same inbox )

They may suggest that a charge of €50 will apply for "Clearance Data Modification" in order to change the declaration they're made to customs - tell them in exceedingly polite terms to fcuk right off. If you have declared it properly, then the error is theirs. Tax and duty has already been paid on these goods so you are not liable for further charges.

If you get no satisfaction, get onto the head of customer service and/or the managing director. Again, be succinct, polite and express your disappointment at the level of customer service etc

In the meantime, dig around in the Revenue site regarding importation of goods of Irish origin and if you can't find any useful information, email revenue and explain your situation. Try customsreliefs@revenue.ie. They'll be busy and maybe slow to respond but I've always found them helpful

Expect to be fobbed off a lot so be prepared to be dogged

    Good luck!

Cheers for the informative reply. I mailed revenue yesterday and explained the situation and they were back on today looking for more info.
I'll contact DHL on your provided email address too and explain it to them, not expecting it to be a straight forward we got it wrong but will keep following up cause it's pissed me right off

once you get a response from Revenue accepting that there is no tax or duty to pay, DHL don't have a leg to stand on and should deliver immediately
