Toilet seat lid slams

Hi. I have a soft close toilet seat which was squeeky so I placed a few drops of WD 40 on it. When I put the seat back on the toillet bowl the seat is closing perfectly smoothly but the lid is slamming. It closed fine before the WD40. Are there any adjustments I can make to stop this from happening. Many thanks.

On the more expensive seats you can buy replacement hinges/cylinders.

Thank you. It doesn’t seem to be possible to get the cylinder out as it runs the width of the seat.

Either soak the lot in some degreaser and hope the squeak doesn’t come back, or buy a new one.

Thanks. The squeek is sorted but somehow the lid slams now but the seat doesn’t.

That’s because there’s no friction (because WD40) - remove the WD40 from the equation and see where you are.

Ive a self closing toilet seat, as below. Its loose but when I try to tighten the screw it doesn't tighten, just goes round and round. Its fairly new aswell. Do I have to take apart the entire toilet?

Ive those same ones... and probably same issue...
My daughter used to climb on it to see in the mirror when she was brushing her teeth.
The thing you push in (left of your pic) acts as a kind of rawl plug/ fixing - and if there's too much action on it it kind of wears away....
I haven't taken mine apart to look at it yet. But im guessing i might need to dril lit out and put in a new one.

Its the first time Ive had to tighten it. The fixing screw sits into the adjustment ok but doesn't tighten when its screwed. Moves alright but just seems to keep moving on the same thread.

Actually come to think of it... the soft close on mine still works... its just that the seat itself slides all over the place when you sit on it.

    Yep same here. Very annoying.

    Im going to try these
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/SelfTek-Toilet-Hinges-Fixings-Expanding/dp/B078YSBS2S/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=top+fix+insert&qid=1564397916&s=diy&sr=1-1

I reckon the rubber will be a better job than the hard plastic...

Suppose you could also try adding your own rubber to your existing ones (if you can get them out in one piece). Like a small sheet of bicycle tube.

Just to gt back on this... I got the rubber inserts from my link above ^ ("top fix inserts" seems to be the phrase you are looking for if you're looking elsewhere)
They did the trick ... for now. Will see how long it lasts.

I think they will hold, the rubber is a better job because it squashes up as you screw the screw in and fills the hole.
I didn't have to drill out the old inserts - they just lifted out easily they weren't doing much at all. On that - I'd be very careful if anyone is drilling out from ceramic toilet.... might crack the whole lot.

OK got it sorted, the thread on the screw was worn so the nut couldn't travel up. New screw and bolt, sorted.
