Is there any brand that has the undoubted best auto gearbox?

Reading reviews of different auto boxes, seem to find some saying "X is a great autobox", yet others say its pants.

What brand of car would be recognised as having the best (most reliable?) automatic box?

ZF 8 speed gearbox found in modern BMW's, Jaguars and Mercedes to name a few. Fantastic piece of kit.

Yeah, I know a couple of folks who own Beemers and swear by their auto's.

The eCVT in the Toyota/Lexus hybrids are bombproof. Not massive fun though.

CVT in the new Civic is pretty good. Feels closer to a traditional Auto than a CVT, in some respects.

We have 4 all told in the family ranging from x16d to x20d to x30d and it suits them all perfectly. Even the 16d is very torquey with it.

    We have 5.

I've had 5 auto BMW over the years and gearbox has been great in them all. Even the e46 318i I had was good and that was a 4 speed as far as I remember.
The e39s were all 5 speed with sports option, the e60 was a 6 speed (preferred the e39 though) and currently have an f10

Thats the thing. I really like Lexus is300h or gs300h, but that rubbish gearbox really putting me off. I haven't driven it myself, but I read people give out about it a lot.

Again, I heard auto in newer Bmw is very good.

    Any opinions on DSG?

I would like my next car to be auto, so no harm doing research.

Is this thread about torque converter boxes or dual clutch , I hope one day to have an 8 speed zf as my daily driver, ie an Iveco van.

Just watched this. I like his stuff and actually learned quite a bit.

    Interesting thoughts on CVT.

DSG is a very good dual clutch gearbox, it has a very smooth and quick gear change. Requires more maintenance though, I think the box needs an oil and filter change every 60k mile though. Some versions are also less reliable than others and all still use a flywheel.

We have the 7speed DSG and 8 speed ZF. The DSG is phenomenal, smooth lightening quick changes, a bit dimwitted at lower speeds sometimes, and reverse can be a bit harsh but it is brilliant. It is also the dry version so no oil changes required.

The ZF8 is also superb, no weaknesses at all. You won't go wrong with either.

If you read actual owner reviews, most people are very complimentary about it as regards day to day real world driving.

A lot of the negative reviews are from professional motoring journalists who have been pushing the car to its limits.

You are quite right. After I watched Ozzy fella, I actually learned a lot more about auto and I would prefer CVT way more now.
I did originally went towards DSG dual clutch system, but now I am not sure. By the looks of it, buying second hand one is a complete gamble as majority of people wouldn't even know how to treat it. Hence so many of DSGs having issues.
