Buying a car from a dealer with a short NCT

I'm in the market for a cheap car to run around in for the 12 months and I've spotted a Passat that fits the bill. It's at one of the larger SIMI registered 2nd hand dealers in Dublin and everything looks good except the NCT, which runs out next month. Where would I stand if I put it in for an NCT straight away and it failed? Would I have grounds to return the car as not fit for purpose?

You wouldn't at all. You'd be knowingly buying it with a month left.

Have you asked them about it? They might intend to put it through the NCT prior to sale, it would not be unusual to wait till sold and then do it.

Get them to nct it again before you buy it. You can do it 3 months early, so it's in the window.

Buy on condition of nct before you take home.

You'll have no luck trying to bring it back after.

How cheap is the car? If it's a very cheap car then the dealer probably just took it in as a trade-in an they are not going to spend money on it at that price point. I'd bet if they put a fresh NCT on it they will want more money for it unless they know it won't pass and don't want to spend big money on fixing it as they won't get it back.

Ask them to put it through the NCT as a condition of the sale even if it's just to get the fail sheet and see what it fails on. Decide then if it's worth buying other than that it's just a gamble.

there are so many cars out there would you be arsed buying something that you have to put through the NCT straight away?
