Hi lads, I'm looking to try and get my partner an ultrabook (is that what you call them now?) For Christmas, but a bit stumped..

I have a budget of between 1000-1250, just not sure what the best spec to go is. Would ideally like something with a bit of power as she using some intensive programs for work, but need it to be quite light and portible. Ideally no bigger than 14inch, 13.3 being perfect.

Also, will be buying in a bricks and mortar shop.
    Any thoughts on the Zenbook?

Thanks so much for any input you can give!

the old version is available in pcworld b&m shop

but the new one has some very nice features and there were some issues with weird coil-whine noises on the old one

amazon has very good customer service if there was any issue.

I was looking for something similar recently as a work computer (I'm a contractor) and found best value on the Dell Outlet, but that mightn't suit everyone. Not sure what strictly counts as an ultrabook, but ended up with a Latitude 7490, 32GB RAM, 512 NVME drive, 8th Gen i7, touchscreen for €1,100. Lovely and light, and much faster than I'll ever need. Might be worth a look if you're not in a rush. I hung around for a New Unused laptop that suited, but have had zero issues with refurbished in the past.

From a quick look at consumer laptops, something like this maybe (refurbished so maybe not depending on preference).

They seem to have an extra 12% off gaming systems at the moment too with a Xmas promotion.

OP saying b4 Christmas so I would say that that rules Dell out as even on in stock items like refurbished the delivery times can be pretty long.

Thanks so much for the replies thus far. I know the cost was meant to be a great machine and all, but doubt I would have that till Christmas. The Zenbook looks the business, and the UK model has a serious spec!! It's annoying that Curry's won't sell the same current spec one for that money too, that would be a great machine for the money.

Curious tho, what would you prefer the XPS or the Zenbook?

I prefer the current zenbook model. love that slight tilt hinge for typing and it looks cool

So annoying that the Irish shops sell the old machine for the same price I can get the new one in the UK!

amazon has excellent service if something goes wrong (free postage returns etc)

why not just get it through them?

very few laptop sellers in the irish market really that offer any value and not much choice. most buyers are at the budget end of the market so there is little competition at the medium to high end.
