Yaris thermostat issue

    Hey Folks,

Tested the thermostat of a friend's Yaris, and the thermostat will only open at around 90 degree. I saw a stamp on the surface of the thermostat with 82 degree at which it should start open, so about 8 degree difference. Do you think is this Okay? The car never had overheat. I think there is no need to replace a new one but, check with Toyota technical manual, it says a new one is recommended.

Also, my friend was thinking to replace with a new one as he found that the cabin warming up was a bit slow.

    If replace, I am thinking:

    1) OEM thermostat from Toyota dealer (cost about 50 quid I think).
    2) Blue Print in Amazon UK (about 20 quid).
    3) Mahle thermostat from Amazon De (about 25 quid).

Do ye have any idea? Should the thermostat be replaced, if yes, which thermostat would ye recommend?
    Thanks,

What you are saying is contradictory.

You think the thermostat isn’t opening early enough. So it’s allowing the engine to get too hot before it opens and regulates the temperature.

Your friend thinks the car isn’t warming up quickly enough. But this would usually mean the thermostat is stuck open so the engine is slower getting up to temp.

I’d say there is nothing wrong. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Sorry to make it confusing. I meant my friend thought that the heater did not get warm quickly enough even the "Cool" engine light had turned off for a while. So just want to figure out should the thermostat be replaced and if dont replace it, will it affect the fuel consumtion? From what I tested, I think the thernostat was slightly stuck open.

Rule of thumb is - the later (higher temp) thermostat opens, the quicker engine heats up (in brief).

Look up available thermostats and their specs (if available) and go for one. ;)

If your 82 degrees thermostat runs on 90 degrees, it shows the thermostat are bad. It must maintain the rated temperature. Soon it can be 105 and your engine seized. Do not buy anymore the 82 one because it is way too low. They using these only on Africa, where the ambient temperature are much higher.
