GPS speed watcher?

In light of yesterday's pending penalty points changes and some recent close calls with the speed van and uncertainty over whether I was or was not caught speeding and the mental anguish of that I want to buy a Sat-Nav that will literally start roaring at me as soon as I am over the posted speed limit and that it should know the speed limits of where I am at the time, a friend of mine has a new Toyota Hybrid which has built in GPS and knows the limit and alerts him for breaking the speed limit.

I have an older Sat-Nav a Garmin Nuvi 265W, this is 9 years old. I wonder if I could incorporate anything into that? This year I went from a 1.5l up to a 2.0l automatic car and it is like a rocket compared to what I was used to and I just need something to slow me down and literally drive me crazy. I would be spending most of my time on familiar local roads so know where the speed traps are etc. but one of these would be great for driving unfamiliar territory etc.

I use tom tom overlay on my phone.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.speedcams.android.map&hl=en_IE

Windows phone used to have this built in.

I found the garmins a PITA to use. A phone much better. But have you ever updated the Garmin with the latest maps and software?

I have a 2017 update on an SD Card and a really old outdated list of speed camera locations from www.irishspeedtraps.com which I put on it around 2010 or whenever the speed vans started first.

Wait what! How did they make the changes so fast?
They were only proposals last time I checked yesterday.

I think sometimes an SD card sat nav can give old speed limit notifications-I've noticed on mine which is from 2013 it's occasionally different from the current speed limit on the particular road.

If you have google maps on android or iphone you can get an app called waze that will tell you when you are over the speed limit.

I've not tried it as I have deiced to just use normal observation to see speed limit signs.

They are not implemented yet but after seeing the news today how an election won't be held next year you can be sure there will be some changes coming in the near future to the system. I'm willing to buy a new satnav if I have to or else try out the various apps.

Google maps is brilliant-there's also Google time line which actually saved me from getting a speeding ticket as it proved I wasn't where the police said I was when my car was shown speeding near Aberdeen 11 o'clock at night-Google time line proved I was 350 miles away at the time-the police put it down to a cloned number plate.

Here Maps also has a speed limit warning when you go over and flashes red. Great when you don't know an area or badly signposted for speed limit.

They can't handle roads where the speed limit differs in opposite directions.

I don't think his proposal got a good reception from the other td s but I think the point of the thread is that it is probably something that you have been looking for anyway.

Sygic GPS software on a smartphone will give you a voice alert if you go above a trigger value over the limit and it can be set to a personal limit which triggers the warnings. It does not need roaming data, the maps can be downloaded on to the phone.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Wase is free and works well. I set the alarm for the limit +5%.

I use it constantly with Android Auto.

I have used Waze extensively - great app.

Waze has this function, and is free. Though I found the speed limits were wrong in the areas where they changed earlier this year (a good few roads were reduced from 100 to 80 km/h in Cork) - I haven't checked more recently to see if they were updated.

Use the speed limiter function on the cruise control if you're really that concerned about tipping over the limit.

Do all cars support this to be retrofitted?
Much work involved in getting this installed in my 90s toyota?

I doubt it, I've only seen it in more modern cars with more sophisticated ECUs, throttle-by-wire, etc. Also needs to be integrated with satnav and or road sign recognition.

Also,I think it's more for motorways and is scary on minor roads!

Bit of an odd recommendation from OSI then

I think you're confusing cruise control with speed limiter. Cruise keeps the car at a set speed whereas the limiter won't allow you go above a set speed no matter how much you depress the accelerator pedal.

Didn't think Waze would be so popular here. Integration with Android auto and carplay helps. The social part of it allowing users to tag things is a great idea but it needs a decent community base to be effective.

I don't Waze as good as finding things as google maps. Hence I use google maps and tom tom overlay.

What you really need is a limiter linked to the speed check.

On VWs you can set a speed alert (beep) when you exceed a certain speed. On some cars though you have a proper limiter, seperate to the cruise control. Handy for the tunnel.

I'm not talking about automatic sign recognising systems, I'm talk about your bog standard cruise control system, most of which have a speed limiter mode that simply stops you accelerating past a limit you set.

I'd argue "most" don't a speed limiter function, it is a much more recent development with cruise control. Any car with cruise control I've driven (granted, not a massive amount of cars) has not had it.

How is a speed limiter scary on minor roads?

I'd accidentally activated the speed limiter on a hire car. Got a fright when the car wouldn't clear the roundabout on a national road luckily there was no traffic. Sometimes you need speed to get out of trouble not slow and at least with cruise control its deactivated by the brake you have to remember to turn off speed limit.

Yeah we've one car with cruise control but no limiter.

Back to GPS please unless Opy agreed r to that solution

Maybe something like Hummingbird GPS Speed Alert would be of interest

The limiter can be used seperately on mine. Set the limiter for 80km and unless you floor the accelerator the car will not go above this speed. Speed is controlled up to 80 by use of the accelerator. Using the brakes or clutch will not effect the setting.

Mines the same but I'm not too keen on using it on country lanes, seems better on motorways .

Waze was acquired by Google in 2013.

Encouraging large US Companies to buy out Israeli companies for large sums of money is even worse.

Tried this on my android secondary phone (Apple here) and it works but it doesn't emit a warning when I actually break the speed limit. Also it can go 500metres before reflecting the changed speed limit, e.g. today I was around half a kilometre into the 100km/h zone before it changed from 60KM up to 100KM.

Did you turn on the warnings I think there is a delay which you can configure before it will warn you to give you some time to adjust your speed.

For me its always updated within about 50m.

I'm using an Alcatel and it has a faster GPS and maps refresh than my old Moto G and it has a compass which the moto didn't.

If you have an old Windows mobile lying around try that as speed display and warning was built into maps on that.
