Do Gardai with speed guns have to pull you over to get penalty points?

    Hi

Was doing about 55km in a 50km zone and only saw a Garda car late and saw that he had the gun out the window. Im guessing it was a speed gun. He didn't pull me over so in wondering if I can still get done.

I saw somewhere that if they can't record the speeds and that they have to pull you over to nab ya.

    Is this true?

    Thanks

No, but they usually do pull you over. If he didn't stop you, I wouldn't give it a second thought. If your speedo said 55, you were probably more like 52/53, a Garda won't stop you for that.

55 indicated on my car is only 50 real speed, you may not have been speeding at all.

My understanding is that a handheld speed gun uses radar only so they would have to pull you over in order to issue points and a fine.

I would have thought the same, would they have time to get your reg number?

Na, it's just a radar gun that measures speed of an approaching vehicle. They usually have either a motorcycle unit or squad car parked further down the road to pull you in if initial waiving you down doesn't work.

I'd say the OP has nothing to worry about.

They have to pull you in with a hand held gun, you got away with it. Confirmed by a friend of a friend who is in the Garda. I was wondering this before was in same position

Thanks all for replying. A relief Turner say the least. It's in a 50km zone that really cud be a 60km zone but I'll be a lot more careful from now on.

      Don't think that's true.
There's frequently a garda holding a speed gun at the bottom of the Tallaght by-pass at Templeogue in a 50km/h zone and also there's one often seen hiding behind the bus shelter on the same road - inbound before the Spawell roundabout. Neither stop vehicles.

They do. I've seen a good few pulled in over the years. A real shooting fish in a barrel spot.
The sort of place that proves they are only doing it for the numbers.

Which is what you want to maximise the efficiency of their work, so fair play to the Gardai for once. The more they can catch in a given time, the greater the productivity. They dont always choose they spots so well though.

There has been at least two fatal accidents on the 50km stretch of the n81 between the spawell roundabout and templeogue bridge, both involving pedestrians.

Wasn't aware of that. If so I stand corrected.

your post just shows they are doing it for the numbers.

They should be maximizing the effectiveness of their work

Not at bottom of a hill on a dual carriageway going from an 80 to a 60 to a 50

      Waste of time
