Do main dealers have much play in giving discount for new cars?

Depends on the model, time of year, what dealer has in stock, your trade in, etc.

What are you looking to buy?

Yes, but there are different sales models for different garages at different times of the year, so research and be prepared to haggle.

For example some sales men are looking for sales to hit a target personal target, others might have to shift excess stock bought by garage to hit a group discount for a particular model, especially if it's a new model where it's likely any excess stock can be easily shifted without going below cost.

Biggest discount I got was 4k off asking price when haggling. I was buying in December, straight, I'd my market research done and I was ready to walk away if sales man did not come down. My worst discount was 1500. And in last car deal I did I got 2000 off.
