Currently I’m driving a 2008 Golf tdi match with 170k miles and a full service history. I’ve had the car three years and I’m doing about 35k mikes per annum.
I’ve recently got a new job which will increase the annual mileage and also require carrying around a lot more equipment.
I’m considering what to change my golf for as nice a car as it is I’ll have to start leaving luggage on the rear seats in the new year which is far from ideal both from a theft and safety view point.

Ideally due to my local mechanic I’d like to stick with VAG cars my only requirments are a minimum engine size of 2ltr,with a big boot and preferably xenons.
    What are my choices?
I’d also like to spend as little as possible!

Without knowing what budget you have other than not much, you can expect to get recommended a lot of stuff.

Have you checked out the VW Jetta? Should tick most of your boxes. It has a pretty generous boot and it's pretty much a Golf after that.

You need a 2.0tdi RS4 styled A4 Avant chipped , on coil overs with 19" alloys.

If you like the golf so much how about an estate?
I've an Octavia estate and love it. The boot isnt just big, the shape of it is very practical. I'd imagine the golf estate is very similar.

Skoda superb. Nice and comfortable for the extra miles and plenty of age-range on sale to find something with the spec you want in your budget. The car is also 95% boot.

The vw passat b7 in saloon or estate if you are willing to back a year or stretch the budget. 2013,2014 ones seem to be in plentiful and a lot cheaper than 2015 b8s

Maybe an Octavia VRs if you want something a little more racy.

After sitting on this for a while I've set my budget at max of £14k plus VRT.
I'll be in the UK with work next week and will be around the areas which h Carbase covers so I may take the chance to buy one of the below cars.

    A6 Ultra Sline 90k miles £14k
    https://www.carbase.co.uk/used/audi/a6/2-0-tdi-ultra-s-line-4dr/aetv46264348/

    Octavia VRS 2015 73k mile £12k
    https://www.carbase.co.uk/used/skoda/octavia/2-0-tdi-cr-vrs-5dr/aetv95687607/

    A4 Ultra Sline 2015 55k miles 13k
    https://www.carbase.co.uk/used/audi/a4/2-0-tdi-ultra-163-s-line-4dr-nav-/aetv88872038/

I'm hoping to visit some dealers in Ireland this weekend for some test drives as I've never driven any of the models.
The only car I've had a Journey in was an A6 but it was an SE model and it may be a bit big for my needs.
At the moment I'm thinking the VRS might be the way to go.
    Any thoughts?

    Maybe a Golf GTD?

    Maybe a Golf GTD?

Mr Bond he said "other" than a golf . Not another golf.

    Maybe a Golf GTD?

I’d love one but they’re just too small.

    Octavia for me

As luck would have it I’m snowed in today! Any opinions on the A4 compared to a VRS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 589 ✭✭✭ddarcy

I’d say look at the Octavia and Jetta. If too small then look at the Passat or Superb. Also Audi’s as well too, maybe an A4. I’m not too familiar with Audi though.

You mentioned carbase, maybe sign up to carwow as well. I’ve seen 2015 Passat Business editions on there for 12-13k so will have a high spec anyways. Doesn’t hurt to see other options.

A Golf ---> Superb would be a massive increase in storage space. Maybe even too much?

One downside of passat saloon over Octavia is the boot opening. The passat has a great boot, but the saloon opening does restrict what can be carried. You'll have same problem with a4 or a6 saloon. Huge boots, but impractical due to relative narrow opening.

However if you go passat estate or Skoda, you will have much more usable boot space. Could go a4 estate.

What about golf estate. They are not common but are similar car to what you have plus extra space.

Potentially, that is why I would suggest looking at the next step up first with the Jetta/Octavia. It really depends what the OP would be currently putting in the back seat. If it’s on carry on type case then there is no need to go above the Octavia/ Jetta. If the back seat is full and it’s beginning to come into the front then a Passat/ Superb would work. I would suggest a Skoda though as you should be able to meet all your needs under budget

+1 on the FR estate from the UK, they are great value over there and VRT looks reasonable.

Interior doesn't look to be a massive come down versus the Mk 7 Golf and the infotainment system is the very same, no electromechanical parking brake in the Leon but coming from a 2008 Golf you won't be used to that anyway.

    https://www.carbase.co.uk/used/seat/leon/2-0-tdi-fr-5dr-technology-pack-estate/aetv88813884/

This one is the 150bhp version, vrt coming in at €1900 so less than €13500 cleared + costs of getting the car & inspection etc. Good car for the money. Full LED Headlamps too!
