    Hi,
This is not a VRT query. Im buying a demo car in UK. My question is how will i be covered for tax from garage to the ferry and what evidence can i get for the garage as thwy are saying i need dealer plates, or some evidence showing car is roadworthy (insurance is no problem).1

Ask dealer to tax it for you as part of the deal or pay them extra. You can pay the motor tax at a post office...
I’ve just bought a car – what should I do?

The seller should have given you a V5C/2 – sometimes called a New Keeper Supplement – when you bought the vehicle.

You can tax online or at the Post Office using the 12-digit reference number from the V5C/2 New Keeper Supplement.

If car is less than 3 years old it is not due an MOT.

I presume you know car is liable for VAT on top of VRT when a vehicle is less than 6 months old OR has travelled less than 6,000km.?

There is already a huge importing from the UK thread in the buying forum.

There are no dealer plates issued. Only UK residents with a UK bank account can tax the car online for 1 month as to tax it for one month only involves setting up a direct debit. The dealer can tax it on your behalf for 6 months using your debit/credit card for payment alright. They should be able to claim a refund of unused tax once the car has been declared permanently exported, a decent dealer would then forward you on a cheque for that refund amount but some don't bother. Not sure if you can contact the DVLA to get the refund directly after the car is VRT'd and registered here.

I think you can also just tax it for 1 month at a local UK post office too but have never done it.

BTW how old and what mileage is on this "demo" car in the UK? If the car is 6 months old or less and/or had less than 6000 km on the clock then Revenue here class it as a brand new car and you will be liable for VAT as well as VRT when you register in here.

You can tax it online yourself, you will need the V5 to get some details from it then just go online and enter your credit card details and you’ll get a confirmation in an email (no tax disc in the UK anymore)

I’ve done it 3 times already this year. You don’t need a post code either. Whole thing took a few mins.
