Dublin to Cancun - checked bags and immigration?

    Hi all,

We are booked with BA from Dublin to Mexico.

    Our itinerary is :

I believe the flights will be with American Airlines (except for Dublin to Heathrow)

    Dublin to Heathrow
    Heathrow to Miami
    Miami to Cancun

    Going home:

    Cancun to Philly
    Philly to Dublin

I'm just wondering what the story is with our baggage and immigration. Can we check our bags the whole way through to our destination in Cancun from Dublin?

Or will we have to collect our bags in London and then also in Miami ?

How does the immigration work in Miami - would it take long?

    usually depends on the ticketing.
If you have bought separate tickets for each leg it can be hard to convince the person at check in to check the bags all the way to destination.

Of course, if you clear customs at any stop you'll need to collect bags and re check.

Thanks for that... we booked all the flights at the same time as a return journey so we should be fine ?

Not necessarily. If all booked on the ONE ticket, you will clear Immigration and Customs on your first point of arrival in the US (MIA) same on the return (PHL) as the US does not have an *in transit* procedure.

You don't actually have to recheck - there is usually a carousel just after Customs where you hand (your already tagged) bag over.

You need to check it's all on the one ticket and not a cobbled together itinerary.

I would suggest minimum of 3 hours to complete these formalities at both MIA and PHL.
