Were they the staple diet of anyone else's Christmas dinner in the 70's ?

my mam used to have a glass of blue nun at christmas and for some inexplicable reason would give black tower as gifts.

Well it's very cheap and it is low in alcohol so many people who wouldn't normally drink liked it?
I guess it somehow became a tradition too.

I'd say it was an introduction to wine for a lot of Irish people, myself included.

    Liebfraumilch is still around!

The name means "milk of the beloved wife" and there is a legend/folklore that drinking it will help a woman to get pregnant.

Mind you, if trying for that result, it's probably best if the husband doesn't drink too much of it ;)
