just wondering about this, i returned our switch approx 11 months old to nintendo repair centre in the UK As it wouldn't charge at all.

I've had the report back saying that the air vent has been damaged and it is this that is stopping the switch from charging. they are looking for 160 euro to repair it saying it's customer damage.

do you reckon the damage to the air vent would prevent it charging??

Hard to see how. The air vent is there to exhaust heat out of the system. If the Switch wouldn't charge, whether powered on OR off, then I fail to see the connection. Was there liquid spilled that perhaps went inside the vent maybe?

nothing like that, it just stopped charging. it's really frustrating because nintendo are refusing to repair it under warranty

Do they give a full explanation of the connection between the damaged vent and it being unable to charge?
If they're expecting you to pay then I would at minimum expect them to give you a full reason why.

Yeah the worry there is if they do fix it will it just break again? Might be a good idea to contact repair places (if there is any) to see what their opinion is. More likely it's that liquid got in it. So easy to happen.
Even with my protective cover on mine of obviously can't have the vents covered and liquid could get in it
