NCT emissions failure

Driving a 2007 1.4L petrol Nissan Note, back from the NCT with an emissions failure, any feedback welcome.

    Temp: 92C
    Low Idle: CO 1.74 vol%
    Lambda: 0.98
    High Idle: CO 0.81 vol%
    HC 41ppm

NCT centre is local and the vast majority of my driving is in the city. Apparently I should've taken it for a good long spin last night/early this morning to burn off some of the crud in the engine, didn't so the engine went in having only done the 2-3 miles from my place to the test centre.

Friend recommended throwing in an additive like RedX/Dipthane as well but online feedback seems divided between works great/does nothing.

Waiting to get in to see my mechanic later. Hopefully it's not an expensive fix.

Like I said, any feedback welcome.

A good larruping up and down the motorway won't do it any harm at this juncture. According to those figures, it appears to be running a bit rich - was it serviced recently, air-filter, etc?

Full service back in I think April, about 5.5k km ago.

Right. A shot of RedEx won't do any harm, and might just help. Your mechanic will scan it for fault codes I expect, and go from there. Best of luck with it, Chief.

If it hasn't been driven on a motorway for a while, give it a good 30-40 minutes at the full 120, it's OK to leave it in fifth as the engine will have to work quite hard to maintain this speed. If there is no motorway and you can only do 100, then drive at that speed for the same amount of time but keep it in fourth just to get the revs up and to make the engine run good and hot. Constant low speed short distance driving is bad for any engine, old schools petrols like this are by far the best at withstanding this kind of driving and you won't have any reliability problems, nonetheless it's good to thrash the engine in it every now and again so you don't get a build up of carbon or anything like that.

Make sure the car is good and hot (drive it in lower gears, at higher speeds and accelerate harder than usual) the day you take it for the NCT as well. Also make sure you turn up well before your scheduled test time because they'll often test you early if you show up early, so the engine will be as hot as possible, and consequently the emissions readings will be as low as possible.

I'm sceptical about RedX or Diptane (I think they are pure placebo effect) but a bit of either won't do it any harm. See how you get on with that, and take it from there.

Most of those concoctions are basically naphtha - they can be of benefit in engines that actually need cleaning, but most of the time they do near-enough nothing.
