Why is Tokyo - Vietnam so expensive?

Direct flights on this route are about 4 times more expensive than to other cities in that region. Example, Bangkok, Manilla, etc. I can't seem to get a reasonable direct flight.

Not sure what part of Vietnam you'd be looking at. But there's flights on 17th Jan, Tokyo to Hanoi, for 120 quid. 18th Jan 122. 19th 139. Etc etc.

Edit: that's direct too.

I know when I went to Japan in 2010 it was cheaper to fly home to Ireland and then to Hong Kong than it was to fly direct. The reason at the time was the huge number of passengers who were travelling for business, i.e. it was their job who was sending them rather than themselves paying for it, so the flights were scarce and expensive.

Might be something similar?

17th Jan Tokyo to Ho Chi Minh City one way 167 euro.Don't forget you need a visa to to enter Vietnam if you are an Irish citizen.A British passport holder can enter without a visa and stay for a max 15 days.

Ok thanks. I was looking for next September. There are no low fares like that. I hadn't known about the visa. I'm looking at either of the 2 main cities.

You could fly to BKK and get a low cost on to SGN or HAN fairly handy, might have to taxi to Don Muang for this though.

Or.... wait til a lot closer to travel time and book a cheaper single hop, do check up the VISA situation, there may be a visa on arrival option now, I came overland and had hardship with waiting in Laos for 2 days for a passport stamp before getting on a bus for 40 hours.

If you are travelling overland the VOA is accepted at certain border crossings.The agency can update you.
