    Hi All,

I noticed this morning that my engine light is flashing, as i accelerate over about 40km p/h, from about 3rd gear up. I notice also that it is sluggish enough to accelerate. Any idea what this could be?

The car is a 05 Toyota Avensis Unleaded. Up until very recently, this car has been zero trouble. I'm actually reluctant to change it, its so reliable.

    Anyway, any ideas on this?

    Thanks

One of the ignition coils died, very common thing. Any mech with generic OBD testing thing will tell you which one exactly.

Do not drive it much until replace a coil - you may destroy catalytic converter.

A dirty spark plug can also cause this.

Strongly advise not to. But if you really have to, take a gamble. I destroyed mine after approx 50 km of driving on 3 pots, however I'm obviously not able to determine how long it took to damage it and how log will yours survive. ;)

You can get 2nd hand coil from breakers for 20-25 euro, replacement would take maybe 30 minutes for a first-timer, the only tool needed is 10mm wrench. :)

The fact that the light is flashing means it's a serious fault. While the problem will be (relatively) cheap to fix, the more you drive it the more you risk damaging the engine or catalytic converter. Obviously for the light to be flashing the car will be severely down on power. Get it towed to your garage.

OP, are you going to repair this DIY? Do you have scanning equipment?

    Hi All,

Car repaired earlier by mechanic, so all sorted. Thanks again for your advice. You were correct. One damaged ignition coil and a few spark plugs replaced. Was reasonable enough to fix in the end.
