Questions on suprapubic catheter.

    Hi all

Due to some long term and serious health issues I'm thinking about getting a suprapubic catheter put in for me and I am looking for some information if anyone has any. Note that I am not looking for actual medical information or opinions on weather it would be suitable just information on how to go about it and how long I'd have to wait and stuff like that.

So I have a regular catheter in place and it is causing ongoing problems with pain and leaks and movement etc. While discussing the issues on a UK forum someone suggested that I would be better with a suprapubic catheter. I'd never heard of one but some quick Googleing suggested it would be suitable. As the forum I follow is a UK one there is no information about getting it done over here on that site.

So how would I go about getting one put in. I'd assume going to my gp would be a first step but is it then referred on to a consultant for evaluation. Most importantly is there a long waiting list for seeing a consultant and waiting for the actual surgery. If I want the surgery does the consultant just go ahead with it assuming I'm suitable or do they try and put you off as it could be looked at as elective surgery rather than necessary by some people. Finally would that sort of surgery be carried out in all regional hospitals or would it be considered a very specialist procedure and only carried out in a small number of units.

Thanks for reading such a long post and thanks for any answers.
