Date of first registration of car 30.01.2009

    expiry on existing disc 29.01.2019

so i had my NCT today, 03.12.2018.

the NCT cert states the disc will expire 29.01.2020.

should i not have got a 2yr disc?

going by my calculation the car isn't 10 yrs old until 30.01.2019

You need to test more than 3 months in advance of the due date to qualify for the 2 year cert I believe

thanks, but is it not based on the first registration of the vehicle + 10 yrs.

booking or testing time certainly hasnt anything to do with it. in fact you cant do the test any sooner than within the 3 months before the due test.

That's what they told me last year when I was enquiring about a 2yr cert for my 08

as per NCT, well, she told me nothing on phone and didnt seem to understand my point.
she said first i needed to book it in anytime in the 90 day period, which i replied i have and it passed. its now 03.12.2018.

then i said the car on Jan 29 2019 is technically not 10 yrs old. to which she then replied they go by the month, not the date ? go figure.

I actually don't mind getting a 1 yr disc, its just the principle of it.

I said, the NCT for cars over 10 yrs old is 1 yr, and 2 years if below it, and my car is due for testing and has passed all within the 30.01.2009 to 30.01.2019 window.

    go figure.

You got the right cert. There is a twist in it: you have to take the test at least 90 days earlier to due date, in your case the last day was 31st October.
If you look at it this way: up to 90 days equals to due date remaining the same and in this case the due date on 10th anniversary, so the car is 10 years old. Sneaky alright but you have to go with the flow. And smart enough to not to get lost. ;-)

In your case it was reasonably straight forward.
You tested within 90 days of the cert date and as such the test is treated as a normal renewal and will be valid to normal renewal date. As this is the tenth anniversary test, it only valid for 1 year going forward.
Testing 91 or more days early would have been regarded as a voluntary test, wouldn't be regarded as 10 years old and would get test for 2 years from date of test pass.
You could have got October 2020 if tested in time. Instead you get January 2020. Not the end of the world.
