    When buying a house is there any easy way of finding out when it was built?

    Thanks,

    If you check the ESB meter, it should have a little tag with an installation date on it.
    Failing that , if it is recently built you could ask the neighbours.

    Roughly how old are you talking about? For anything built after the Local Government (Planning and Development) acts came into force it should be possible to search for the planning permission in the local planning office. For anything earlier than that possibly check historic OS maps.

    Sorry should of been clearer, I'm looking online at houses, no access to the houses at the moment, was looking for an online solution.

    Most houses are pre electricity where I'm looking ;-}

    Ask the vendor - they should have the date on their BER certificate.

    Checking the title deeds may help.

    The Ordnance Survey have released new maps at http://map.geohive.ie/ - under "Data Catalogue" select "Base Information and Mapping" and then select a map. "6 Inch Cassini" seems to vary from circa 1925-34. You can use the "Transparency" selector to compare between maps.

    If you can access the planning database you can see when planning was approved from clicking on the location.

    If they're pre-electricity they are also pre-planning, so no help there.

    As others have said, check historicl OS maps, although that only narrows it down to a couple of decades. If the house is part of a development, local lore may remember when the development was done. But the biggest help is going to be just looking at the architectural and construction features of the house, plus knowing when the areas the house is in was developed for residential purposes.

    More indicative than definitive, but if you have the BER number it will give a year of construction on the details page Link.

    This could also be a stab in the dark but if the assessor was familiar with the area it could be reasonably accurate.
