Anxious about future work decision

    Hi everyone,

I started in a job last year, however I am unhappy in it for a combination of reasons. When I joined the company I took a significant pay cut but I dealt with it at the time as it meant I could move back home (while also not ideal) but I was happy enough to do so at the time as I felt it would be easier to settle in to and perhaps meet people to socialise with at home.

As it turns out I can only say that it wasnt great from day 1, however while my work mates were OK, there was not much of a social scene there however I was happy enough to stay on for a while at least despite poor pay and conditions especially in comparison to other companies in the industry. What happened after is worse as a load of people have left recently to better themselves which has left a poor atmosphere in the workplace which is really hitting my mood.

I now feel myself that the time has come for me to move on with a fresh start and get new employment elsewhere even if it does mean another move. I feel I have to for my own sake as the atmosphere is dead and negative and just down right depressing. It is also very disheartening to see workmates who you got to know just leave, especially so many over a short space of time and Im also feeling left behind. The thing is, I have an interview for a job next week for a job position that may only pay slightly more than my current salary, however, it is a more reputable company than my current employer. I am wondering should I go ahead with this application (if successful) or should I consider roles that I know will pay better and better myself.

Going to work has been challenging lately and Im not sure if I can carry on with it particularly with the amount of people who handed in their notice recently. Should I take the first thing that comes my way (ie interview next week) and take a chance on it for a fresh start or should I hold on (reluctantly) until I know a better position comes onstream and go for that. Im just not sure and feel very torn by the situation as I feel at this time for my own sake a fresh start is what I need but I am very anxious about making a right decision.

If you are unhappy in your current role, and there is little prospect of that changing, then I think you should move. You say it's only a small increase in pay: an increase is an increase, better than a decrease!

You need to identify what exactly is holding you back or keeping you in that job. If it's simply anxiety about making a big decision, then that is not a good reason to stay. Big changes will always generate some level of anxiety.

This is really something no one can advise you about, I don't think. But at the end of the day, if you get this job, there is still nothing stopping you from keeping the feelers out for something better.
