Driving licence renewal question

Not sure this is in the right place. Mod, feel free to move it if appropriate.

I've an old-style driving licence (the pink cardboard foldover one) that's absolutely battered to bits, and literally held together with sellotape.

It's due to expire on March 10 next. I know you can renew from three months out, which I make December 10, and I aim to do so pretty soon.

Thing is, we're off on a family holiday next February, where we'll be renting a car. I know I'll have to produce my licence at the rentals desk there.

So, question is - let's say I renew my licence on December 15 next. Will it say valid from December 15 (i.e. the date I renew), or will it say valid from March 11, 2019 (i.e. the date after the current one expires)?

Basically, will I be able to give them a nice shiny new one at the car rental desk in Spain in February, or will I have to hand over a battered piece of cardboard with sellotape on it?

P.S. - I see I could apply for a 'replacement for damaged licence' in the meantime, but it costs €35 and would expire on March 10 anyway. So I'm not sure it's worth either the cost or the trouble.

    That's fine. Thanks.

And turns out I won't be renewing in December anyway, because there's not a single appointment available at the NDLS centre in Wexford during the whole month.

Can't even do the 'renew online' thing, as you need a government PSC card to do that, you have to turn up in person to get one, and there are no appointments there in Wexford until January either....

Ah well...at least I'll have something to do in January!

Just walk into the ndls and take a number! No appointment needed. Might have to wait but had mine done in 40 minutes!

Don't go for the replacement, it will have the current expiry date on it hence the cheaper price of €35. If you want it for another 10 years go with the renewal for €55.

Nah, wouldn't have gone for the replacement anyway.

Thanks to the others for the 'just walk in' advice. Didn't know what the story was with that. There's a link on their website all right for 'walk in appointments' but the page itself is empty.

Yeah in my center there was no booking available for a month! But I walked in early that morning and was seen straight away.

It’ll have the same valid from date as the original. It’ll just have a new issued on date.

Well, that's different from what somebody else said above. And if that's the case, I'll still have to produce the old battered-up one at the car rental place in February. Ah well, what can I do.....

I went to both renew and change address on my pink license.

I was a week too early for renewal, but they gave me a change of address for free.

So if you've got a different address than whats on you pink license you can get a free swap over. Then you have to pay for the renewal later.

Yes, anything above car/light van requires a medical report.
